Three ways out of Aomori Airport
From Aomori Airport (AOJ) you can choose between the airport bus to Aomori Station, the airport bus to Hirosaki Bus Terminal, and a reservation-only shared taxi to the Sannai Maruyama Site or Shin-Aomori Station. This post only collects the stops, travel times and fares listed in this app's Aomori guide.
The bus stops are just to the left as you leave domestic arrivals, and the regular taxi rank is just to the right. Pick the option that matches where you are staying the first night.
To Aomori Station: airport bus (stop 2)
The airport bus to Aomori Station leaves from airport stop 2. It takes about 35 minutes to Aomori Station and costs JPY 980 (elementary school children JPY 490).
Tap your transit IC card on the reader when you board, or take a numbered ticket if paying cash. You pay on board when you get off. Buses from the airport only pick up at the airport, and buses to the airport only let passengers off at the airport.
From 1 October 2026, the fare boxes on the airport bus (JR bus) no longer change JPY 10,000 or 5,000 notes. If you pay cash, have JPY 1,000 notes and coins ready.
To Hirosaki Bus Terminal: airport bus (stop 1)
For Hirosaki, take the airport bus to Hirosaki Bus Terminal from airport stop 1. The ride takes about 55 minutes and costs JPY 1,600 (elementary school children JPY 800).
You can pay with transit IC cards, contactless credit cards or cash. Hirosaki is centered on Hirosaki Park, which spreads over the grounds of Hirosaki Castle.
Sannai Maruyama Site and Shin-Aomori Station: reserved shared taxi
The airport shared taxi links the airport with the Sannai Maruyama Site and Shin-Aomori Station at set fares. It takes about 30 minutes to the Sannai Maruyama Site.
Per person, the fare is JPY 2,500 to the Sannai Maruyama Site and JPY 3,000 to Shin-Aomori Station; from 1 December to the end of February it is JPY 3,000 and JPY 3,500. You can book from one person, from one month before until 15:00 the day before.
The regular taxi rank, which needs no booking, is just to the right as you leave domestic arrivals.
After you arrive: onward from Aomori and Shin-Aomori stations
The area around Aomori Station and the port is easy for a first visit: the airport bus, city buses and the Nebutan-go route bus all leave from the station, and the Nebuta Museum WA-RASSE is a 1-minute walk away.
The Nebutan-go costs JPY 300 per ride for adults (JPY 150 for elementary school children; cash to the driver), JPY 800 for a 1-day ticket and JPY 1,000 for a 2-day ticket. City buses bound for the Sannai Maruyama Site leave from stop 6 in front of Aomori Station and reach 'Sannai Maruyama Iseki-mae' in about 30–40 minutes for JPY 310.
The Tohoku Shinkansen stops at Shin-Aomori Station, which is linked to Aomori Station by the JR Ou Line. For Hakkoda, the JR bus from Aomori Station to the Hakkoda Ropeway station takes about 60 minutes in summer and about 80 minutes in winter, JPY 1,290 one way. In winter part of the road is closed, so buses only run between Aomori and Sukayu Onsen, and the timetable changes with the season; check the official information for train and bus times.
