What late December to early January is like
November to February is Bangkok's cool, dry season and the most comfortable time of year. March to May is very hot, and June to October brings short, heavy afternoon downpours, so if you want to spend the year-end holidays somewhere warm, the weather makes this an easy pick.
This post covers roughly a week around the holidays, from Christmas to the first week of the new year. For the whole December–February season and for year-end city trips in general, see the links below.
December and January normals, and what to wear
The figures below are 1991–2020 normals for Bangkok Metropolis station from the Thai Meteorological Department submission · WMO normals collection (NOAA NCEI), rounded to whole numbers.
December is the driest month of the year (12 mm on average) and has the lowest daytime highs of the year. January is also dry at 24 mm, and a little warmer by day at 33°C. Nights average 23°C in both months, so you will not need a heavy jacket; light, breathable clothes work best by day.
At temples, cover shoulders and knees and remove shoes indoors. The Grand Palace and Wat Phra Kaew do not admit sleeveless tops or shorts, so pack one set of long trousers and a top that covers your shoulders. If you go to Ayutthaya, a hat and sunscreen are a must as shade is scarce.
- December: high 32°C · low 23°C · rain 12 mm
- January: high 33°C · low 23°C · rain 24 mm
Countdowns and light shows: check official dates
Year-end events backed by the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), such as Bangkok's New Year countdown and events along the Chao Phraya River, are announced on TAT's official newsroom (tatnews.org). Dates and venues for the 2026–27 holiday season are announced by the official site, so check before you go.
If you plan to see a riverside event, Wat Arun is a good reference point. You cross the river to it by small ferry from the pier near Wat Pho, and it looks best at sunset from the opposite bank. For boat and rail service or crowd control on event nights, check the operators' and organisers' official notices.

Days of the week and opening times around New Year
31 December 2026 is a Thursday, 1 January 2027 is a Friday, and 2–3 January are Saturday and Sunday. Chatuchak Weekend Market runs on Saturdays and Sundays, so the first weekend of the year is a good morning for it.
The Grand Palace's official site (royalgrandpalace.th) lists opening hours as daily 8:30–16:30, with tickets sold 8:30–15:30 (checked 14 October 2026). Check the official information before you go for the ticket price and any special holiday arrangements.
New Year closures of offices and banks, and any late-night public transport on New Year's Eve, are announced separately each year. Check the official information before you go.

A short plan: fitting the 4-day route to the holidays
The guide suggests 3 to 5 days in Bangkok. The day-by-day route is in the Bangkok 5-day itinerary post, and the Grand Palace, Wat Pho and Wat Arun in one day are in the old-town temples post, so here we only adjust the order to the holiday calendar.
Day 3 in the guide is Chatuchak Market at a weekend, otherwise an Ayutthaya day trip. If that day falls on 31 December (Thursday) or 1 January (Friday), use the weekday plan; on 2–3 January (Saturday–Sunday), use the Chatuchak plan. Alternate indoor and outdoor plans to cope with the midday heat.
- Day 1: Grand Palace and Wat Phra Kaew in the morning → Wat Pho and a massage → ferry to Wat Arun, Chinatown (Yaowarat) for dinner
- Day 2: Siam malls and Jim Thompson House → afternoon break → sunset from the observation deck
- Day 3: Chatuchak Market at a weekend, otherwise an Ayutthaya day trip → evening at a riverside or local night market
- Day 4: slow morning of cafes and massage in Sukhumvit → Airport Rail Link to Suvarnabhumi (BKK)
Getting around and budget
In the city, combine the BTS Skytrain (Sukhumvit, Siam, Silom), the MRT Blue Line (Chinatown, Sanam Chai station near Wat Pho, Chatuchak; tap in with a contactless credit card) and the Chao Phraya Express Boat for the Grand Palace and Wat Arun (Sathorn Pier connects to BTS Saphan Taksin). Ride-hailing apps fix the fare in advance, but traffic is often heavy, so mix them with rail; agree on the price before getting into a tuk-tuk.
From Suvarnabhumi (BKK), take the Airport Rail Link (about 25–30 min, about 15–45 THB) or a taxi or ride-hailing app (about 30–60 min, about 350–500 THB). From Don Mueang (DMK), take the SRT Red Line (about 15 min + transfer, about 20 THB; fare policy can change, check official) or the A1 Airport Bus (about 20–40 min, about 30 THB).
The guide's daily budget levels are about 1,200 THB (hostels, street food, public transport), about 3,500 THB (4-star hotel, restaurants and massages, ride-hailing) and about 10,000 THB+ (riverside luxury hotel, fine dining, rooftop bars). According to Thailand's Ministry of Tourism and Sports (2025), foreign visitors to Bangkok spent an average of 6,069.73 baht per person per day (spending there; excluding international airfare). Actual costs vary widely with your itinerary and lodging.
