Short answer: a Tuesday-to-Sunday day, an ABC ticket and a timed entry

Sanssouci Palace in Potsdam is an easy day trip from Berlin. In our Berlin guide's 4-day plan, Day 4 offers a choice: a day trip to Sanssouci with an ABC ticket, or bus M45 to Charlottenburg Palace and the Ku'damm instead.

You need to sort out three things. Potsdam is in fare zone C, so you need an ABC ticket; entry to the palace is by timed slot and daily numbers are limited, so buying online in advance is recommended; and it is closed on Mondays. Opening times and prices can change, so check official information again before you go.

The route for Days 1 to 3 is in our Berlin 4-day article. This one focuses on how to prepare your day in Potsdam and where to fit it in.

Sanssouci Palace: opening times and tickets

Sanssouci was the summer palace Frederick the Great loved most, and it stands above its vineyard terraces.

It is closed on Mondays and open Tuesday to Sunday 10:00-17:30 from April to October. Tickets cost €14. Entry is by timed slot and daily numbers are limited, so buying online in advance is recommended. Once your travel dates are set, secure your ticket first.

The opening times here are for April to October. If you plan to go from November onwards, check opening times and prices in official information first.

Tickets: Potsdam is in zone C, so buy ABC

Berlin's public transport is split into three zones. Zone A is the inner city up to the S-Bahn ring, B runs from the ring to the city boundary, and C covers about 15 km around Berlin, including the airport and Potsdam. An AB ticket is enough on days you stay in the city, but on your Potsdam day you need an ABC ticket.

An ABC single ticket costs €5.00 and is valid for 120 minutes for a one-way journey with changes, but not for return trips, so going there and back on singles takes one ticket each way. If you will also ride around the city that day, there is the ABC 24-hour ticket (€12.90), with unlimited rides for 24 hours from validation. If you plan to use the Berlin WelcomeCard, the 72-hour card costs €39.50 (AB) or €45.50 (ABC), so choose ABC if Potsdam is on your plan.

Paper tickets from machines must be validated before you ride. For the line from Berlin to Potsdam, the journey time and how to get from where you arrive in Potsdam to the palace, check official public transport information.

Fitting it into a Berlin stay: 4 or 5 days

The guide suggests 3 to 4 nights in Berlin. With 4 days, spend Days 1 to 3 in the city and on Day 4 choose either the Sanssouci day trip or Charlottenburg Palace and the Ku'damm. With 5 days, you can put the two palaces on separate days.

The day of the week matters most. Sanssouci and Charlottenburg Palace are both closed on Mondays, as are the Neues Museum and the Berlin Wall Memorial's Documentation Center. If a Monday falls in your trip, plan always-open places like the Brandenburg Gate or the Wall's outdoor exhibition for it, and go to Potsdam on a Tuesday to Sunday.

Once the date is set, buy your timed Sanssouci ticket first and plan the rest of that day's travel around it.

Sanssouci vs Charlottenburg Palace: which one?

Both are Day 4 options in the guide's plan. Choose Sanssouci if you want a day out of Berlin, and Charlottenburg Palace if you would rather stay in the city and pair a palace with a shopping street.

Charlottenburg Palace is Berlin's largest palace complex, centred on the Old Palace built in 1700, with a wide Baroque garden. Take bus M45; the Old Palace ticket costs €12, and the charlottenburg+ day ticket (€19) for the palace gardens' sites includes a timed entry to the Old Palace. The Ku'damm shopping boulevard starts at the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church, and the palace lies to the west.

When to go: seasons and a pre-trip checklist

The opening times above are for April to October. Deutscher Wetterdienst (DWD) 1991–2020 normals for the Berlin-Tempelhof station put Berlin's daytime highs in that period at about 15°C in April, about 20-25°C from May to September and about 14°C in October. Morning lows are about 5°C in April and about 7°C in October, so bring a jacket in spring and autumn.

If you go in November or December, check Sanssouci's opening times in official information, and consider Charlottenburg Palace in the city (10:00-16:30 in November and December) as well. The Christmas market season usually begins at the end of November (first Sunday of Advent), with some markets from early November (visitBerlin).

Check official information on entry requirements before you go.
