The short answer

Dalian is a port city at the southern tip of the Liaodong Peninsula, with sea on three sides and a climate officially described as free of severe cold in winter and scorching heat in summer, mild for China's northeast. You walk its vast squares, coastal roads and early-20th-century streets, and nearby Lüshun holds the former prison where Korean independence activist Ahn Jung-geun died.

Qingdao is a seaside city on the Shandong Peninsula, known for red-roofed European-style old streets, coastal promenades, beer and seafood. To the east, Laoshan is where the mountains meet the sea.

Best for: Dalian suits fans of historic architecture and history sites, vast seafront squares and coastal roads. Qingdao suits travelers who want to wander old streets and the seaside promenade, then end the day with draft beer and seafood.

Airports and getting around

Dalian Zhoushuizi International Airport (DLC) has its own Metro Line 2 station, running into the city via Zhongshan Square and People's Square; change to Line 1 for Xinghai Square. With heavy luggage or a late arrival, take a metered taxi from the airport taxi rank, and have your hotel address in Chinese.

Qingdao Jiaodong International Airport (TAO) is a long way north of the city. Since Metro Line 8 fully opened in September 2026, it runs from the airport to May Fourth Square with no change. Limited-stop express trains run only at set times, so check official information.

Getting around differs a little too. In Dalian, Metro Lines 1, 2, 3 and 12 are the useful ones: Line 12 reaches Lüshun and Line 3 reaches Jinshitan. In Qingdao, metro lines connect the old town, May Fourth Square and the coast, and a seaside path runs from Zhanqiao Pier to Badaguan and May Fourth Square. The Qingdao guide notes bag checks at every metro station, so allow extra time. In both cities taxis are metered, and showing your destination in Chinese helps.

How many days, and what it costs

Both guides suggest 3 to 4 days. The Dalian guide's plan covers Zhongshan Square's historic buildings and Russian Style Street, then Xinghai Square, Binhai Road and Laohutan Ocean Park, then a day trip to Lüshun, adding Jinshitan's beaches if time allows. In Qingdao it runs from Zhanqiao Pier and the old town to Signal Hill Park, St. Michael's Cathedral, Badaguan and May Fourth Square at night, then the beer museum and a beach or Laoshan.

The two guides give exactly the same daily budgets per person. So rather than choosing the cheaper city, choose by what you want to do.

Weather by month, side by side

The figures below are 1991–2020 normals from the China Meteorological Administration submission · WMO normals collection (NOAA NCEI): Dalian station for Dalian and Qingdao station for Qingdao. Each line gives high/low temperature and monthly rainfall for the same month in both cities.

The Qingdao guide calls May-June and September-October mild and clear, the best time, and the Dalian guide recommends late spring to early summer and autumn for seaside walks. In these normals, May highs are 21°C in both cities.

The Dalian guide says July and August are the hottest months with busy beaches, and the Qingdao guide says July and August are crowded with beachgoers and hotels fill fast during the summer beer festival. August rainfall is 172 mm in Dalian and 160 mm in Qingdao, the wettest month of the year in both cities. Typhoons occasionally reach Dalian (one made landfall in Dalian in September 2022).

January highs are 0°C in Dalian and 3°C in Qingdao, and lows are below freezing in both. Both guides warn of cold sea winds in winter. Qingdao can get sea fog or dust in spring, and both cities are very crowded over National Day (around October 1).

What you'll see and eat

Dalian is squares and coastline. The classics are Zhongshan Square, a circular plaza about 213 m across ringed by buildings from the 1900s-1910s; Xinghai Square, described as the largest city square in Asia; Binhai Road, with sea views from Laohutan toward Bangchui Island; Laohutan Ocean Park, with polar and coral halls and a cable car over the sea; and Russian Style Street, a roughly 500 m pedestrian street from the era when Russia began building the city in 1898. Allow a full day for Jinshitan, with its rocky coastline and beaches.

Lüshun is usually a day trip, changing from Metro Line 1 to Line 12 at Hekou. The Lüshun Russo-Japanese Prison Site Museum is where Ahn Jung-geun was held after shooting Ito Hirobumi in Harbin in 1909 and executed on March 26, 1910. Individual visitors can now enter without booking by showing valid ID, so bring your passport. The Lüshun Museum, opened in 1917, is nearby too. Lüshun has military facilities: do not enter or photograph areas marked as military zones.

Qingdao is old streets and seaside walks. The classics are Zhanqiao Pier stretching out over the sea, Signal Hill Park looking over the red roofs of the old town and the sea, the twin-spired St. Michael's Cathedral, the old villas of the Badaguan scenic area, the beer museum with beer history and tastings, and May Fourth Square at night. Laoshan, a mountain by the sea with old Taoist temples, is far from the city, so allow a day.

Seafood leads in both. Dalian's signatures are sea cucumber, abalone and scallops, sea urchin dumplings, fried menzi, seaweed buns and dough-drop soup (geda tang); Qingdao's are spicy stir-fried clams, draft beer, fish dumplings and lamb skewers.

How to choose — or do both

For historic architecture, Lüshun's history, vast seafront squares and coastal roads, choose Dalian; for red-roofed old streets, seaside promenades and draft beer with seafood, Qingdao fits well. To visit both, add up the guides' trip lengths (3 to 4 days each), and check official information from the transport companies for how to travel between the two cities and how long it takes.
