The short answer
Fukuoka's guide names the late March to early April cherry blossom season, together with autumn in October-November, as the best time to visit. The Fukuoka Castle ruins park next to Ohori Park is a top cherry blossom spot, and both are free.
Exact bloom timing changes every year, so check the official cherry-blossom forecast before you fix your dates and again just before you go. Blossom season is a busy time to travel, so look into accommodation and transport early.
When do the blossoms come?
Fukuoka's guide gives the cherry blossom season as "late March to early April". It presents this season, together with autumn in October-November, as the ideal time for a Fukuoka trip.
Exact timing changes every year. Blooming can come earlier or later from one year to the next, so check the official cherry-blossom forecast before booking your stay and flights, and once more just before you go.
Plan your trip within late March to early April, but leave a little room to shift by a day or two once you see the forecast.
Where to see them: the guide's pick
The guide's spring cherry blossom spot is the Fukuoka Castle ruins park. It sits right next to Ohori Park, a large lake park, so the two are easy to combine, and both are free.
Ohori Park has a loop path around the lake. The area around it is a calm residential neighborhood a few subway stops from Tenjin, so staying nearby in blossom season makes a morning walk to the flowers easy.
This is the cherry blossom spot the guide itself names. If you are looking for other places, check that year's official tourism information.

March-May weather and what to wear
Japan Meteorological Agency normals for Fukuoka station (1991–2020) give March a high of 15°C and a low of 7°C, April 20°C and 12°C, and May 24°C and 16°C. Rainfall rises a little each month: 104 mm in March, 118 mm in April and 134 mm in May.
Blossom season, late March to early April, falls between the March and April normals. A light jacket is enough by day, but morning and evening lows of about 7-12°C can feel chilly, so pack layers.
Normals are 30-year averages and any given year can differ. Check the weather forecast before you leave, and a small umbrella is handy.
- March: high 15°C / low 7°C / rain 104 mm
- April: high 20°C / low 12°C / rain 118 mm
- May: high 24°C / low 16°C / rain 134 mm

A short spring itinerary
The guide suggests 3 days in Fukuoka, or 4 with a Yufuin or Beppu day trip. Below is the guide's own plan; on the morning of Day 3 you walk Ohori Park and the castle ruins. Check the bloom forecast and put that walk on the day the flowers look best.
Dazaifu Tenmangu is about 30-40 minutes from Tenjin by Nishitetsu train, and it is less crowded in the morning. Yufuin and Beppu are about 2 hours from Hakata by highway bus or limited express, so start early.

- Day 1: Subway from the airport to Hakata, Kushida Shrine and Canal City in the afternoon, then dinner at the Nakasu yatai
- Day 2: Dazaifu Tenmangu in the morning, Tenjin shopping in the afternoon, then motsunabe for dinner
- Day 3: Ohori Park and the castle ruins in the morning, Momochi Beach in the afternoon, then sunset from Fukuoka Tower
- Day 4 (optional): Early day trip to Yufuin or Beppu, then back to Hakata for ramen
What to book early and how to get around
Blossom season draws many travelers, so look into and book your accommodation and transport, such as flights, as soon as your dates are set. The guide notes that Golden Week and New Year are busy too. Check official information on entry rules before you go.
The airport is close to the city. From Fukuoka Airport subway station (domestic terminal) on the Kuko Line, Hakata is about 5 minutes and Tenjin about 11 minutes, for about 260-310 yen. If you arrive at the international terminal, first take the free shuttle bus (about 10-15 minutes) to the domestic terminal, or take the bus from outside the international terminal to Hakata Station (about 15-20 minutes, about 400 yen).
In the city, IC cards such as hayakaken, Suica and ICOCA work on subways and buses. Hakata, Nakasu and Tenjin are 20-30 minutes apart on foot. For Dazaifu, take the Nishitetsu train from Tenjin (Nishitetsu Fukuoka Station); it uses different stations from JR, so check where you depart.
- Accommodation: book as soon as your dates are set (the Ohori Park area is quiet and close to the blossom spot)
- Flights: check early, and leave room to adjust to the bloom forecast
- Tax-free shopping: Japan's system switches in November 2026 to a refund method, where consumption tax is refunded after customs confirms export on departure. Bring your passport and check official Japan Tourism Agency / National Tax Agency information.
- Cash: some small eateries, shrines and yatai are cash only.
