Which numbers we used

The temperatures and rainfall here are the Korea Meteorological Administration 30-year normals for 1991–2020 at Gangneung station: average high, average low and monthly rainfall, rounded to whole °C and mm.

Normals are long-term averages, so they don't tell you this year's weather. Festival dates also change every year, so check the Gangneung city tourism site before you go.

January-June normals

Korea Meteorological Administration, 1991–2020, Gangneung station. Each line shows average high / average low / rainfall. January is the coldest month, with an average low of about -3°C.

Spring (March-May) and June: Gyeongpo cherry blossoms and the Danoje Festival

In spring a cherry blossom festival is held around Gyeongpodae and Gyeongpo Lake. Gyeongpo Lake is a lagoon separated from the sea by a sandbar, about 4 km around and known for its old pines and cherry trees. From Gyeongpodae Pavilion's raised site you can see the lake and the sea; it is open all year and free.

The Gangneung Danoje Festival runs for about a week around the 5th day of the 5th lunar month along Namdaecheon Stream. It was named a UNESCO Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity in 2005 and has shaman rituals (gut), a large open-air market, folk games and hands-on activities like washing hair in iris water. It is free. The dates of both festivals change every year.

Summer (July-August) and September-October: swimming season, rain and the Coffee Festival

Swimming is allowed only during each beach's official season. There are no lifeguards before the season opens or at night, so you can't go in the water then. Gyeongpo Beach has 1.8 km of white sand backed by 4 km of pine forest, with showers (KRW 3,500) in swimming season.

July-September get a lot of rain: about 250 mm, about 293 mm and about 229 mm. Average highs in July and August are about 28°C and about 29°C. KTX-Eum trains on the Donghae Line sell out fast on weekends and in the summer holidays, and it is worth comparing accommodation prices for your dates early in the summer holidays too.

October has an average high of about 20°C, an average low of about 12°C and about 114 mm of rain, less than September. Anmok Beach Coffee Street grew from a row of roadside coffee vending machines and now has about 30 coffee shops, and the Gangneung Coffee Festival ran 21–25 October 2026.

Jeongdongjin is a famous New Year sunrise spot, about 14 minutes from Gangneung Station by KTX-Eum. There are few trains, so check times. Accommodation is most of the budget in sunrise season, so compare prices for your dates early.

Gangneung Station is about 2 hours from Seoul Station by KTX. A regular city bus costs KRW 1,530 by transit card (KRW 1,700 cash), and with a card you get up to 2 free transfers within 1 hour of getting off. Fees and opening hours can change, so check official information.
