The short answer: check closing time first, then go for a half-day

Yangdong Village was listed by UNESCO in 2010 as part of 'Historic Villages of Korea: Hahoe and Yangdong'. It has about 160 old houses, 54 of them over 200 years old. Gyeongju brings together several UNESCO sites (Bulguksa and Seokguram, the Gyeongju Historic Areas and Yangdong Village), and this post looks only at how to visit Yangdong Village in a half-day.

The key is closing time. Yangdong Village is open 09:00–19:00 from April to September and 09:00–18:00 from October to March. Check transport there and back with official sources before you go; once your times are set, choose where it fits in the basic 2-day Gyeongju plan.

What is Yangdong Village?

Yangdong Village was listed by UNESCO in 2010 under the name 'Historic Villages of Korea: Hahoe and Yangdong'. Gyeongju's other World Heritage sites were listed earlier: Bulguksa and Seokguram in 1995, and the Gyeongju Historic Areas, which include Daereungwon, in 2000.

The village has about 160 old houses, 54 of them more than 200 years old. Where Gyochon in the centre is a hanok village you can walk around free, 24 hours a day, Yangdong Village has an admission fee and set opening hours. So it works better as a planned visit than a casual stop.

Hours and admission: closing time changes with the season

Yangdong Village opens at 09:00, and closing time depends on the season: 19:00 from April to September and 18:00 from October to March. From October it closes an hour earlier, so in autumn and winter bring your afternoon plans forward.

Admission is KRW 4,000 for adults. Of Gyeongju's main sights, the paid ones are Cheonmachong and Donggung Palace (KRW 3,000 each for adults) and Yangdong Village, while Bulguksa, Seokguram, Cheomseongdae and Daereungwon are free. Check child and youth fares and last entry time with official sources before you go. Fees and hours can change.

Getting there: check the route and your ride back first

Check bus routes to Yangdong Village and travel time with official sources before you go. Routes and timetables are on the Gyeongju traffic information centre site (its.gyeongju.go.kr), and the tourist helpline is 1330. If you arrive by KTX, you can also ask at the tourist information centre inside Gyeongju Station (054-771-1336).

When you check, look at the ride back as well as the ride there. The village closes at 18:00 from October to March and 19:00 from April to September, so settling your return time around that keeps the half-day on track.

Book trains to 'Gyeongju': the station was renamed from Singyeongju on 28 December 2023. Gyeongju city bus fares are flat regardless of distance: KRW 1,300 for regular buses and KRW 1,700 for seat buses, with KRW 50 off by transit card.

Fitting it into the basic plan: after Bulguksa and Seokguram, if time allows

In the basic 2-day Gyeongju plan, Yangdong Village sits on Day 2: Gyeongju National Museum, bus 11 to Bulguksa, then Seokguram, then Yangdong Village if time allows, and finally Gyeongju bread on the way to Gyeongju Station.

Whether time allows comes down to closing time. Take the time you finish Bulguksa and Seokguram, add the travel time to Yangdong Village (check officially), and see whether you can look round comfortably before 18:00 (October–March) or 19:00 (April–September). If it is tight, save Yangdong Village for another trip and switch to the half-day route that sees only Bulguksa and heads back to the centre (post below).

If you really want to see Yangdong Village, put places that close early in the daytime and places that stay open late in the evening. Gyochon is open 24 hours, Woljeonggyo until 22:00, and Donggung Palace and Wolji Pond 09:00–22:00 (last entry 21:30), so they suit the evening.

Summer lotus: a Yangdong Village scene picked by Gyeongju City

Gyeongju City lists flower spots by season, and for summer it names the lotus at Yangdong Village along with Donggung Palace and Wolji Pond. Check bloom timing on the city tourism site's flower calendar.

In summer the April–September hours (09:00–19:00) apply, giving you an hour longer than from October to March. To see the Donggung Palace lotus on the same day, Yangdong Village in the daytime and Donggung Palace in the evening fits the closing times. Donggung Palace is busy with night-view visitors, and arriving close to last entry (21:30) may mean you can't get in, so go early.

Budget and checklist before you go

Admission for a Yangdong Village half-day is KRW 4,000 for adults. If you also see Bulguksa and Seokguram that day, both are free. Check transport costs for the route you use with official sources before you go.

Check the official forecast before you go and bring comfortable shoes. Entry rules for Korea depend on your nationality, so check official Korean government information before you travel. The Bulguksa and Seokguram bus route and the daytime walk in the centre are covered in the posts below.
