Are 2 days enough? The big picture and where to stay
The Ha Long Bay guide suggests 2 to 3 days. Ha Long Bay is explored by boat, so one day for the transfer and check-in plus one day on an official boat route covers the essentials in 2 days and 1 night. This plan starts from Hanoi and adds a 3-day option.
Bai Chay, Ha Long's tourism hub on the west side of the bridge, is the easiest base, with plenty of hotels and restaurants for before and after the boat. For early sailings, the Tuan Chau Island area, home to Tuan Chau International Port where many tour boats depart, is handy; Hon Gai, across the bridge to the east, feels more local. Cat Ba Island is far from Ha Long, so plan transport separately if you want to add it.
Whether to sleep on board a cruise or take a day route is covered in a separate cruise article. This plan follows the guide's own itinerary: a hotel in Ha Long and daytime boat routes.
Day 1: Hanoi to Ha Long, check in at Bai Chay
Vietnam's tourism authority puts Ha Long Bay about 2 hours' drive from Hanoi; it varies with traffic, so leave with time to spare. Travelling independently, take a bus from Hanoi to Ha Long (or Hai Phong), then a taxi to your hotel or the port. This is the independent option suggested by Vietnam's tourism authority.
According to Vietnam's tourism authority, most visitors choose a packaged cruise that includes transport to and from Hanoi. If you do, confirm the pickup point, time and inclusions when booking. If you fly into Hai Phong Cat Bi Airport (HPH) instead of Hanoi, a taxi or pre-booked car takes you straight to your hotel or the pier in Ha Long; check official information for times and fares.
Drop your bags in Bai Chay and have cha muc (Ha Long squid cake) and seafood for dinner. Squid cake is also served with soft steamed banh cuon rice rolls and a sweet, sour and spicy dipping sauce. Sa sung, a prized local sea worm, is pricey, so check before ordering.
- Hanoi to Ha Long by bus: bus to Ha Long or Hai Phong, then a taxi to your hotel or the port. About 2 hours' drive (varies with traffic); check official information for fares
- Cruise package with Hanoi pickup: transport to and from Hanoi included; confirm the pickup point, time and inclusions
- Cat Bi Airport (HPH) to Ha Long: taxi or booked car to your hotel or the pier; check official information for times and fares
Day 2: Route VHL2 — Ti Top Island, Sung Sot Cave, kayaking
Make an early start on official route VHL2. Boats leave from Tuan Chau International Port or Ha Long International Port and operate 5:00-20:00 from April to October and 5:30-19:00 from November to March. Per the management board's official list, the fee for day routes VHL1 and VHL2 is about 250,000 VND, subject to change. A taxi is handy between spread-out areas such as Bai Chay and Tuan Chau port.
First stop is Ti Top Island: swim at the crescent-shaped beach and climb up for wide bay views. Next comes Sung Sot Cave on Bo Hon Island, the widest cave discovered in Ha Long Bay. It sits about 20 m above sea level and is reached by steps, and it is open 7:30-17:30 in summer (Apr 16-Oct 31) and 7:30-17:00 in winter. Caves have many steps and can be slippery, so wear good shoes.
The day ends with kayaking in a designated area, weather permitting. Kayak only in areas set by the authorities and on guided tours. If you head back to Hanoi after the boat, allow about 2 hours' drive plus traffic.

Adding a third day: route VHL1 on Day 3
With an extra day, take official route VHL1 on Day 3. Its heart is the pair of caves on Dau Go Island, Thien Cung and Dau Go. Thien Cung's white stalactites look like a palace, hence its name, 'Heavenly Palace'. Trong Mai Islet (Fighting Cock Islet), the two facing rocks used as a symbol of Ha Long tourism, is seen from the boat.
In the afternoon, try banh gat gu, soft sticky-rice rolls with minced pork (about 30,000 VND a plate), or seafood noodle soup with shrimp and crab (from about 40,000 VND), then head to the airport with time to spare.
The other benefit of 3 days is a spare day. When storms or bad weather approach, authorities suspend tour-boat departure permits, and sailings can be cancelled even when it looks calm. The guide recommends keeping a spare day, so if the Day 2 boat cannot sail, you can move it to Day 3.

Getting around and staying safe: taxis, official ticket offices, life jackets
Vietnam's tourism authority suggests taxis for getting around Ha Long. To travel along the shore, there is coastal route VHL8 linking Tuan Chau International Port, Ha Long International Port and Nam Cau Trang pier; the fee is about 70,000 VND per the management board's official list.
Visit the bay on an official route ticket aboard a registered tour boat. Ignore touts offering hotels or tours along the road or near the piers, and buy at the official ticket offices at the ports. On board, check where the life jackets are and how to wear one, and wear it on deck, on small boats and in kayaks. In July 2025 a tour boat capsized in a sudden thunderstorm with heavy loss of life.
- Don't throw rubbish into the bay or touch or break off stalactites
- Don't buy coral souvenirs or goods from small boats that approach tour vessels
- Carry small cash for local eateries and stalls
Before you go: budget, timing and entry
Per the Ha Long Bay guide, budget per person per day is about 1,000,000 VND for a guesthouse, local food and a day boat; about 2,500,000-4,000,000 VND for a city hotel, restaurants and a day tour or budget overnight cruise; and about 6,000,000 VND+ for an upscale overnight cruise or resort.
Vietnam's tourism authority names March-April and September-November as the best times. According to the Ha Long Bay guide, December-March brings atmospheric mist and cooler weather, and June-August is the monsoon season with unpredictable conditions. Storms in summer and autumn can cancel tours at short notice, so if you travel then, choose 3 days for a spare day and check the forecast often.
Entry conditions (visa-free stay length, e-visas, etc.) can change, so check the Vietnamese government or embassy for official information.
