Three ways from Tan Son Nhat (SGN) into the city

Ho Chi Minh City's airport is Tan Son Nhat (SGN). There are three ways into town: a ride-hailing app, Bus 109 and metered taxis. A ride-hailing app is the easiest way to District 1 (about 25-45 minutes, about 150,000-250,000 VND), Bus 109 is the cheapest if you travel light (about 45-60 minutes), and metered taxis leave from the official taxi rank (about 25-45 minutes, about 200,000-300,000 VND).

The right choice depends on your luggage, where you are staying and which terminal you arrive at, because Bus 109 now runs from domestic Terminal T3 and no longer stops at the international terminal (T2). When you book, check which airport (SGN) and arrival terminal are on your ticket. Below we cover each option, which areas it suits, the day you leave and an arrival-day checklist.

Ride-hailing app or metered taxi: about 25-45 minutes to District 1

A ride-hailing app is the easiest way from Tan Son Nhat to District 1. Fares are fixed in the app, and you meet your driver at the designated pickup zone. The ride takes about 25-45 minutes and costs about 150,000-250,000 VND. Green electric taxis can also be booked in an app or hailed on the street, with transparent fares.

You need mobile data to use the app. Local SIMs and eSIMs are cheap and easy to buy at the airport, so activate one as soon as you land.

If you take a metered taxi, pick a reputable company at the official taxi rank and make sure the meter is running. The ride takes about 25-45 minutes and costs about 200,000-300,000 VND.

Bus 109: the cheapest option if you travel light

Bus 109 links the airport with the Saigon Bus Station at 23/9 Park, which is near Ben Thanh Market and Pham Ngu Lao. The ride takes about 45-60 minutes. Check the fare in the official information before you go.

One thing to know: Bus 109 now runs from domestic Terminal T3 and no longer stops at the international terminal (T2). If you arrive on an international flight, take the inter-terminal shuttle to T3 and board the bus there.

Bus 109 is the cheapest option if you travel light. If you land late at night, check operating hours and first and last bus times in the official information before you fly.

Which option suits which area

Where you stay matters most. Here are four main areas. Note that since July 2025 the district level has been abolished and addresses now use new ward names. Old names like District 1 and District 3 are still widely used, so check both in your map app.

District 1 puts the main sights, hotels and restaurants within walking distance, which makes it handy for a first visit. A typical Day 1 route also strings together Independence Palace, the Central Post Office and Notre Dame Cathedral, the War Remnants Museum and Nguyen Hue Walking Street.

The day you leave: Mekong first, then about 25-45 minutes to the airport

In a typical 4-day plan, Day 3 is a Mekong Delta day trip, and Day 4 is District 3 cafe hopping, com tam for lunch and the Landmark 81 views before heading to the airport. The Mekong trip takes boats through canals, orchards and coconut-candy workshops around My Tho or Ben Tre and needs a full day, so it sits on Day 3 rather than on the day you fly out.

By car, District 1 and the airport are about 25-45 minutes apart. If you plan to use Bus 109, remember it runs from domestic Terminal T3 and does not stop at the international terminal (T2), and check the official information for getting between terminals.

Arrival-day checklist

Sorting out data and money before you leave the airport makes everything easier. Markets and street food are cash only; hotels, malls and chain cafes take cards. Change money at banks or licensed exchange counters; exchanging foreign currency at unlicensed places (including some gold shops) can break the law.
