Short answer: layer up, wear non-slip shoes and carry an umbrella
Kanazawa winters bring frequent snow along with snowy scenery and winter seafood. Preparation comes down to three things: layers for chilly temperatures, non-slip shoes for snowy streets, and an umbrella for rain and snow.
Temperatures here are Japan Meteorological Agency normals for December–February. Check official information for event dates and transport before you go.
How cold it gets: December–February normals
Rounded 1991–2020 normals from the Japan Meteorological Agency's Kanazawa station: December averages a high of about 10°C and a low of about 4°C, January about 7°C and 1°C, and February about 8°C and 1°C. Average lows stay above freezing in all three months, but with lows around 1°C in January and February, mornings and evenings feel cold.
Precipitation is about 301 mm in December, 256 mm in January and 163 mm in February. December is the wettest month of the year. Rain and snow are frequent in Kanazawa.
What to wear and pack
With average highs of about 7–10°C, you'll want a warm coat. Thin layers underneath are easier to take off inside restaurants and museums.
Carry an umbrella and wear non-slip shoes in winter. You can walk from Kanazawa Station to Omicho Market, Higashi Chaya and Kenrokuen, though distances add up, so one pair of comfortable, non-slip shoes matters most.
- A warm coat that blocks snow and wind
- Several thin layers that are easy to take off
- Gloves, a hat and a scarf
- Non-slip shoes that are comfortable for long walks
- Spare socks and a small bag for soaked ones
- A folding umbrella
Winter sights and food
Kenrokuen is a vast garden counted among Japan's three great gardens. In winter, ropes (yukitsuri) protect its trees from the weight of snow, and they are the garden's winter highlight. Go early for fewer crowds. Kanazawa Castle Park, right next door, has reconstructed gates and turrets and is easy to combine.
Winter seafood is one of the joys of the season. Kanazawa oden, with local ingredients such as crab and shellfish, is especially popular in winter (about ¥150-600 per piece). Seafood rice bowls at Omicho Market cost about ¥2,000-4,000; go in the morning when most stalls are open.
For winter festivals and events, check official information before you go to see whether anything is on during your dates.

Getting around on snowy days, and what to check
Frequent city buses link the station and main sights. Taxis from the station rank are handy with luggage or on days with rain or snow. Bike-share bikes are all electric-assisted, which makes slopes easy, but on slippery days consider the bus or a taxi instead.
From Komatsu Airport, the airport bus to Kanazawa Station takes about 40 minutes and costs about ¥1,200-1,400. Check official transport information for timetables and fares.
Most Shirakawa-go highway buses require reservations, and Myoryuji can only be visited on a guided tour booked in advance by phone. Check winter closures and suspensions in official information, and after heavy snow, check same-day service status too.
A short winter itinerary
Plan on 3 days, or 4 with Shirakawa-go. Walking can be slower on snowy streets in winter, so keep each day relaxed. Placing an indoor stop such as the 21st Century Museum in the middle of the day gives you a warm break.

- Day 1: Airport to Kanazawa Station → seafood bowl at Omicho Market → Higashi Chaya in the afternoon → Korinbo in the evening
- Day 2: Early Kenrokuen (yukitsuri) → Kanazawa Castle Park → 21st Century Museum → Nagamachi Samurai District
- Day 3: Shirakawa-go day trip (book the highway bus) → Kanazawa oden for dinner
- Day 4: Myoryuji (booked visit) → Kanazawa curry → the airport
Budget and checks before you go
A daily budget per person is about ¥9,000-13,000 on a budget (business hotel, market food, buses), about ¥20,000-30,000 mid-range (nicer hotel, restaurants, admissions) and about ¥55,000+ for a splurge (ryokan, kaiseki dining). Kanazawa curry costs about ¥800-1,200.
- Book the Shirakawa-go highway bus (most require reservations)
- Reserve Myoryuji by phone in advance
- Check official information on city bus day passes
- Check event dates and same-day service status officially
- Check official Japanese government information on entry procedures (such as online registration)
