Four ways from Niigata Airport into the city
There are four ways from Niigata Airport (KIJ) into the city: the airport limousine bus to Niigata Station, route bus E22, which leaves from the same stop and runs via Bandai to Niigata Station, the mini liner to the Sado Kisen terminal at Niigata Port, and taxis.
Which one suits you depends on where you are staying, how much luggage you have and whether you are heading straight on to Sado Island. Below we cover each option's time and fare, how to ride, what to know about each area, and a first-day checklist. Times and fares can change, so check official information too.
Airport limousine bus: about 25 minutes to Niigata Station
The basic option is the airport limousine bus from Niigata Airport to Niigata Station. It takes about 25 minutes to Niigata Station and costs JPY 470 (children JPY 240).
Pay when you board, in cash or with a transit IC card such as Suica. JPY 2,000, 5,000 and 10,000 notes cannot be changed on the bus, so have JPY 1,000 notes and coins ready or pay by IC card.
The Niigata Station bus terminal opened in 2024, and the airport limousine and the sightseeing loop bus start there. To go back to the airport, board the limousine bus at platform 18 of this bus terminal.
Route bus E22: via Bandai to Niigata Station
Route bus E22 leaves from the same airport stop as the limousine bus. It is a regular route bus that stops at all stops, running via Bandai to Niigata Station in about 33 minutes for the same fare as the limousine, JPY 470 (children JPY 240).
Unlike the limousine bus, you pay when you get off. JPY 2,000, 5,000 and 10,000 notes cannot be changed on board here either, so have small change or a transit IC card ready.
Watch the platform when you head back to the airport. Only the 'E22: Niigata Airport' bus from platform 4 at Niigata Station goes via the airport. The limousine bus leaves from platform 18 and the E22 from platform 4.
The mini liner to the Sado Kisen terminal, and taxis
To go from the airport to the Sado Kisen terminal at Niigata Port, there is a mini liner. It has 13 seats, takes about 25 minutes to the Sado Kisen terminal and costs JPY 1,000 (elementary pupils JPY 500, preschoolers free). No reservation is needed, but you may not get on if it is full, and you pay in cash only when you board (no IC cards).
The timetable for 25 October–30 December 2026 has airport departures at 9:40, 11:35, 12:45 and 14:50. Check the airport's official site for later timetables. If you are taking a Sado Kisen boat, you need to finish boarding procedures 30 minutes before departure, and timetables change with the weather and other factors, so check Sado Kisen's official site as well.
By taxi it is about 25 minutes to Niigata Station and about 30 minutes to the Sado Kisen terminal. A small car to Niigata Port costs about JPY 3,000. Fixed-fare taxis run to set areas of Niigata City but must be booked in advance, with late-night and early-morning fares from 22:00 to 5:00. Check the airport's official site for fixed fares.

What to know about each area
The area around Niigata Station suits first visits and easy transport. It is the terminus of the Joetsu Shinkansen, and the airport limousine and the sightseeing loop bus (platform 18) start from the station bus terminal. From the airport, take the limousine bus or route bus E22 to Niigata Station.
Bandai and Bandaijima cover the busy area around Bandai Bridge and the Bandaijima district at the mouth of the Shinano River, home to the Toki Messe observation room, Pia Bandai and the Sado Kisen terminal. From the Bandai exit of Niigata Station it is about 15 minutes on foot to Bandai Bridge and Pia Bandai, and about 20 minutes to Toki Messe. Route buses from Niigata Station to Toki Messe and the Sado Kisen terminal take about 17 minutes for JPY 260 (children JPY 130).
Furumachi and Honcho are old streets that grew rich as a Kitamaebune port, with a hanamachi atmosphere where geigi (geisha) culture lives on, and Honcho has a market street known as the 'citizens' kitchen'. Check official information for how to reach it from the airport.

Transit IC cards, small change and a first-day checklist
Niigata city buses accept transit IC cards such as Suica. However, only the Niigata Kotsu IC card can be topped up on board, so top up other IC cards in advance. If you pay in cash, carry JPY 1,000 notes and coins.
To get around the city from Niigata Station, there is the Niigata City sightseeing loop bus from platform 18 of the bus terminal. It loops the city centre, past the aquarium and museums, in about an hour; JPY 260 per ride (children JPY 130), or a 1-day ticket for JPY 500 (children JPY 250). It holds 35 people, so when full you may have to wait for the next bus. For a day-by-day plan, see the 2-day post below.
- Check official Japanese government information on entry procedures before you travel
- Have JPY 1,000 notes and coins or a transit IC card ready (JPY 2,000, 5,000 and 10,000 notes cannot be changed on the bus)
- If you plan to take the mini liner, carry cash and check the timetable on the airport's official site
- If you are taking a Sado Kisen boat, leave enough time to finish boarding procedures 30 minutes before departure
- If you want a fixed-fare taxi, book in advance (late-night and early-morning fares from 22:00 to 5:00)
- When heading back to the airport, check the platform: 18 for the limousine bus, 4 for the E22
