The short answer

Cherry blossom season, late March to early April, is one of the best times to visit Osaka. In Himeji, cherry blossom season, with over 1,000 cherry trees in the castle grounds, is the most beautiful time and also the most crowded. The exact timing changes every year, so check the official cherry-blossom forecast before you book and again just before you go.

A simple base plan is to stay in Osaka, walk the Osaka Castle park, and spend one day at Himeji Castle, about 1 hour away by JR special rapid. Blossom season is busy, so book your accommodation and transport early, as soon as your dates are set.

When do the blossoms come?

Late March to early April is cherry blossom season and, together with October-November, the ideal time for Osaka. For Himeji's blossom timing, check the official forecast before you go.

Blossom timing changes every year. This article gives no opening or peak dates, so check the official cherry-blossom forecast once before you book flights and accommodation, and once more just before you leave.

Golden Week (late April to early May) is crowded and pricey. When you pick your dates, check whether they overlap with it.

Where to see them: Osaka Castle and Himeji Castle

Osaka Castle is especially beautiful in cherry blossom and autumn foliage season. The surrounding park is free to explore, while the main keep houses a paid history museum. The JR Osaka Loop Line serves Osaka Castle Park.

Over 1,000 cherry trees grow in the grounds of Himeji Castle. The outer areas are free; the inner castle needs an admission ticket. From 1 March 2026, admission is JPY 2,500 for ages 18 and over (under 18 free), and the combined ticket with Koko-en Garden is JPY 2,600. The castle is open 9:00-17:00 (last entry 16:00).

Himeji Castle is most crowded in cherry blossom season. Also, from early July 2026 to around late July 2027, repair work around the main keep narrows parts of the route and affects the view and the night illumination. A 2027 blossom trip falls within this period, so keep it in mind when planning.

March-May weather and what to wear

Below are Japan Meteorological Agency normals (1991–2020), from Osaka station for Osaka and Himeji station for Himeji: average high / average low / monthly precipitation.

The blossom season of late March to early April spans March and April. Daytime highs then are about 14-20°C, but morning lows are a chilly 6-11°C in Osaka and 3-8°C in Himeji. Daytime temperatures are similar in both cities, while mornings are a little cooler in Himeji than in Osaka.

In March and April, bring a jacket for mornings and evenings; in May, with highs of 24-25°C, light clothes are comfortable. Shoes come off inside Himeji Castle's keep and the stairs are steep, so wear socks and clothes you can move in.

A 5-day spring plan: Osaka plus one day in Himeji

The Osaka guide suggests 4 days, or 5 with day trips to Kyoto or Nara. The Himeji guide suggests a day trip to 2 days, so joining the two guides' itineraries gives the 5-day plan below.

Osaka Castle sits on the first morning, as in the guide's itinerary. Watch the blossom forecast and swap the Osaka Castle day and the Himeji day to catch the best blossoms. If you stay a night in Himeji, the guide's second day takes the Shinki Bus to the Mt. Shosha Ropeway and Engyo-ji, but the ropeway is scheduled to close from 5 February 2027 to around the end of October 2027 for major renovation, so check official information before you go.

What to book early and how to get around

Blossom season draws many travelers, so it is wise to book accommodation and transport early once your dates are set. The Osaka guide suggests Namba / Shinsaibashi for a first visit, or Umeda, where JR, Hankyu, Hanshin and the subway all meet, if you plan many day trips.

From Kansai Airport to Namba, the Nankai Airport Line takes about 35-50 minutes. From Osaka to Himeji, the JR special rapid takes about 1 hour, the Sanyo Shinkansen from Shin-Osaka about 30 minutes, and the Sanyo Railway through limited express from Hanshin Umeda to Sanyo Himeji about 1 hour 30 minutes. From the North Exit of Himeji Station the castle is about a 20-minute walk, or about 5 minutes on foot from the Otemon-mae stop of the Shinki Bus. Use an ICOCA IC card for transit.

From November 1, 2026, tax-free shopping switches to a refund system: you pay the tax at purchase and get it refunded after customs checks your goods at departure. Check official Japanese government information on entry procedures before you travel.
