The short answer
The Perth guide says wildflowers bloom in Kings Park and the Swan Valley in spring (August-October). Perth is in the Southern Hemisphere, so spring here runs August-October, not March-May.
The exact timing changes every year, so check the official bloom and festival information before you book and again before you go. Once your dates are set, it pays to book accommodation and transport early.
What blooms, where and when
According to the guide, in spring (August-October) wildflowers bloom in Kings Park and the Swan Valley. The guide names September to March as best for wildflowers and beach days.
Kings Park and Botanic Garden is a 400-hectare city park, free to enter, showcasing more than 3,000 species of WA flora. It has sweeping views of the skyline and Swan River, and free volunteer-guided walks run daily.
The Swan Valley, about 25 minutes from the city, is WA's oldest wine region, with wineries, breweries and produce stops. You can even get there by river cruise from Perth.
The exact timing changes every year. Check the official bloom and festival information before you book your accommodation and transport, and again just before you leave.
August-October weather and what to wear
Below are 1991–2020 normals for Perth Metro station from the Australian Bureau of Meteorology submission · WMO normals collection (NOAA NCEI): average high / average low / monthly rainfall.
August is cool, with highs of 19°C and lows of 8°C. September warms a little to 21°C by day and 10°C in the morning, and October reaches 24°C by day and 12°C in the morning. Monthly rainfall goes from 124 mm in August to 83 mm in September and 37 mm in October.
Mornings and evenings are cool, so bring a jacket that is easy to take off and put on. The guide notes that WA's UV levels are among the harshest in the world: even on cool or cloudy days, cover up, use SPF50 or SPF50+ sunscreen, and wear a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses.
- August: 19°C / 8°C / 124 mm
- September: 21°C / 10°C / 83 mm
- October: 24°C / 12°C / 37 mm
A 4-day spring itinerary
The guide suggests 4 to 5 days, including Rottnest Island. Its 4-day plan starts with sunset at Kings Park and ends with a Swan Valley trip, so both of the guide's wildflower spots fit in naturally.
The guide's daily budgets per person: about A$110-160 (hostel, groceries, public transport), about A$260-380 (city hotel, restaurants, Rottnest ferry) and about A$650+ (luxury hotel, fine dining, private tours).

- Day 1: Airport Line train to the city, check in, Elizabeth Quay and the South Perth ferry in the afternoon, then sunset views from Kings Park
- Day 2: Train to Fremantle for a Fremantle Prison tour, Fremantle Markets (Fri-Sun) and the Round House, then sunset at Cottesloe Beach on the way back
- Day 3: Morning ferry to Rottnest Island, cycle around the beaches and bays, watch quokkas from a distance, and return on an evening ferry
- Day 4: WA Museum Boola Bardip in Northbridge in the morning, a Swan Valley trip in the afternoon, then the airport
What to book early and how to get around
Once you've set your dates for wildflower season, book accommodation and transport early. The guide's areas make choosing easier: Perth CBD and Elizabeth Quay are close to Perth Station and the ferry jetty and inside the free CAT bus area. Fremantle is about 25 minutes from Perth by train and about 25 minutes from Rottnest Island by ferry, a good base before or after an island trip.
Plan your Rottnest ferry ahead too. The island admission fee is included in your ferry fare; the adult day fee is about A$21.50 (2026-27).
From international T1 and T2, the Transperth Airport Line train reaches Perth Station in about 18 minutes for about A$3.50 or less (about A$3.15 contactless). In the city, ride the free CAT buses; Transperth is cheaper with SmartRider or a contactless Visa or Mastercard than cash, and free on Sundays. Always tag on and off.
A rental car is good for the Swan Valley and other day trips. Australia drives on the left, and don't drive if you plan to visit wineries. Entry conditions (such as the ETA) and biosecurity rules can change, so check official Australian government or embassy information before you travel.
