Three ways in from the airport

From Kyushu Saga International Airport (HSG) there are three main ways into Saga city and the rest of the prefecture: the airport bus run by Saga City buses to the Saga Station Bus Center in front of JR Saga Station, the reservation-only shared limousine taxi to Takeo, Ureshino, Arita or Yoshinogari, or a rental car under a limited-period campaign.

This post covers where to board, fares and booking rules for each, then matches them to where you spend your first night. Check which airport is printed on your ticket first.

Airport bus: about 30–35 min to Saga Station Bus Center, JPY 600

The basic option is the airport bus run by Saga City buses, linking the airport with the Saga Station Bus Center in front of JR Saga Station. No seat reservation is needed, and the JPY 600 fare can be paid with a nationally compatible transport IC card. The stop in front of the international arrivals lobby is stop 2.

Check departure times in the airport's official information. To see the Saga Castle History Museum first, get off at the Hakubutsukan-mae (博物館前) stop (about 20 min from the airport); the museum is right there. It has tatami floors, so you remove your shoes, and key lockers for suitcases are free, so arriving with luggage is fine.

Limousine taxi: to hot springs, pottery towns and ruins, booking required

Limousine taxis are fixed-fare shared taxis between the airport and towns across Saga Prefecture. They run from one passenger, with a set fare per person: JPY 4,000 to Takeo, Ureshino or Arita, and JPY 3,500 to Yoshinogari. The ride takes about 40 min to Yoshinogari, 60 min to Takeo or Ureshino and 80 min to Arita.

Booking is the key point. Book by 16:00 the day before by phone, or by 16:00 two days before online; without a booking they do not run. You cannot simply hail one at the airport, so book as soon as your plans are set. Payment is in principle cash only.

Rental car campaign: 1 April 2026 to 31 March 2027

From 1 April 2026 to 31 March 2027, passengers arriving at Kyushu Saga International Airport pay a basic fee of JPY 1,000 per car for the first 24 hours of a kei-to-compact car if two or more travel together, or JPY 2,000 for one person. It is worth weighing if you plan to drive around several areas.

There are conditions. Book by phone with the rental company by the day before, and show your boarding pass on the day. Rentals that include 26 December 2026–3 January 2027 are not eligible. For other conditions, and for what applies after the campaign ends (the following year), check the official information before you go.

Taxis, and onward from the Saga Station Bus Center

For regular taxis at the airport, check the official information before you go for where to board and fares. Once at Saga Station, the Saga Castle History Museum is about 10 min by taxi or 25 min on foot from the south exit.

Around Saga, use Saga City buses. Board at the rear door and take a numbered ticket, then pay at the front when you get off (IC card users need no ticket). If you ride several times, there is an all-lines one-day pass (JPY 1,000 for adults) and a one-day pass for the JPY 160 fare zone around the Saga Station Bus Center (JPY 350 for adults). Both are sold at the Saga Station Bus Center, and the all-lines pass is also sold on board.

To continue to hot springs or pottery towns, take JR trains from Saga Station: about 24 min to Takeo-Onsen by limited express, about 40 min to Arita, about 12 min to Yoshinogari-Koen Station by local train, and about 70 min to Karatsu by local train. Ureshino Onsen is about 30 min from Takeo-Onsen Station by JR bus. Check JR Kyushu timetables for train times.
