The big picture: pick your base first

San Francisco suits 5 to 6 days (4 to 5 nights). The city is compact enough to explore on foot, and with a ferry to a seaside town and the island prison tour, five days fill up nicely. This post follows the guide's 5-day route and adds options for a sixth day.

Day 1 is the airport, Union Square and a cable car; Day 2 is Alcatraz Island, Fisherman's Wharf and North Beach; Day 3 is a bike ride over the Golden Gate Bridge to Sausalito; Day 4 is Golden Gate Park and the Mission District; Day 5 is Lombard Street and the trip back to the airport.

Choose a base that fits the route. Union Square is the downtown hub near a cable-car turnaround and BART, good for a first visit. Fisherman's Wharf suits families and is close to the Alcatraz ferry pier. North Beach and Chinatown are great on foot. SoMa has museums and modern hotels close to downtown, and the Mission District offers a local feel and mural-lined alleys.

Day 1: BART into town, Union Square and a cable car

From the San Francisco International Airport (SFO) station, BART runs straight to downtown (Powell or Embarcadero). It is the most economical option. With luggage or family, a ride-hailing app or taxi is easiest, and if you travel alone, a shared shuttle that drops you at your hotel is cheaper than a taxi.

After check-in, walk around Union Square, the downtown hub of department stores and hotels, then take a cable car from the nearby turnaround to the waterfront. Single fares are pricey, so compare with a pass, and expect long lines at the turnarounds in peak season.

Some blocks near Union Square change after dark. Stick to main streets late at night and use a ride-hailing app if needed.

Day 2: Alcatraz Island, Fisherman's Wharf, then North Beach

Spend the morning on the Alcatraz tour of the former island prison. It sells out early, so book in advance with the national park's official operator once your dates are set, and beware of costly resellers. The ferry pier is close to Fisherman's Wharf.

In the afternoon, stroll Fisherman's Wharf and the piers: sea lions lounging on the docks, souvenir shops and seafood stands, plus the waterfront classic of clam chowder served in a sourdough bread bowl. It is busy, so watch your belongings.

In the evening, head to North Beach, an Italian-American cafe district next to historic Chinatown that is great on foot.

Day 3: bike over the Golden Gate Bridge to Sausalito, ferry back

The red Golden Gate Bridge, the city's icon, can be crossed on foot or by bike. Today follows the popular combo: bike across the bridge to the bayside town of Sausalito, then take the ferry back. Sausalito is about 30 minutes from the piers by ferry.

Afternoons, when the fog lifts, are often best for bridge photos. Even in summer, fog and wind make it chilly, so dress in layers and bring a jacket.

Finish with dim sum in Chinatown, North America's oldest Chinatown, full of shops and dim sum restaurants.

Days 4-5: Golden Gate Park, the Mission, Lombard Street and the airport

On Day 4, stroll Golden Gate Park, a huge park with museums, a botanical garden and gardens that is good for a half day. In the afternoon, go to the Mission District for its mural-lined alleys and a Mission burrito, a big wrap of rice, beans and meat. The Mission has a park and often warmer weather. City buses and light rail cover most of the city.

On Day 5, see Lombard Street, the short, winding slope lined with flowers. It is a residential street, so keep noise down. Pick up souvenirs, then take BART to the airport with time to spare.

If you have a sixth day, fill it with more of the guide's sights and neighborhoods.

When to go: September-October, and a jacket in summer

According to the guide, September-October is the sunniest and warmest time. June-August often brings fog and chilly days, so bring a jacket, and since mornings and evenings are cool all year, pack layers.

NOAA National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI) U.S. Climate Normals (San Francisco International Airport station, 1991-2020) show September has the year's highest average high at about 24°C, with October at about 22°C. In June-August, average highs are about 22-23°C and average lows about 12-14°C; in December and January, average lows are about 7°C.

September and October get little rain (about 2-20 mm a month). November-March gets more rain (about 52-105 mm a month); of these, December is the wettest at about 105 mm.

Before you go: transport, budget and tipping

A transit card (phone-compatible) makes buses and light rail easy, and multi-day passes exist, so check official information. BART gives fast links to the airport, downtown and Oakland. The hills are very steep, so wear comfortable walking shoes.

Budget per person per day: about US$180 for a hostel, simple meals and public transit; about US$350-450 for a city hotel, restaurants and the Alcatraz tour; about US$800+ for an upscale hotel, tasting menus and a private car. Tipping is normal at restaurants and in taxis (usually 15-20% at restaurants); check whether a service charge is already included.

If you drive, car break-ins are very common, so never leave bags or belongings visible in the car. For US entry requirements, always check official US government information.
