Aomori in Winter: What Fits Into 2 Days?

A 2-day winter route for Aomori: JR bus to the Hakkoda Ropeway for the 'snow monsters' on day 1, then Hirosaki Castle on day 2 and the airport bus home.
Published · Updated
The winter 2-day plan: Hakkoda on day 1, Hirosaki on day 2
Aomori suits a stay of 2 to 3 days. This route is for a winter trip with just 1 night and 2 days. On day 1 you go from the airport to Aomori Station, take the JR bus to the Hakkoda Ropeway to see the 'snow monsters', and stay near Aomori Station. On day 2 you take the JR Ou Line to Hirosaki, walk Hirosaki Castle (Hirosaki Park) and ride the airport bus back from Hirosaki Bus Terminal.
Hakkoda goes first because the ropeway often stops in strong wind. If you miss it on day 1, you still have day 2 morning to try again. The standard route with WA-RASSE and the Sannai Maruyama Site is in our 3-day Aomori post.
Day 1: Airport → Aomori Station → JR bus to the Hakkoda Ropeway
From the bus stop just to the left as you leave domestic arrivals (stop 2), the airport bus takes about 35 min to Aomori Station, JPY 980 (elementary school children JPY 490). From 1 October 2026 the fare boxes no longer change JPY 10,000 or 5,000 notes, so have JPY 1,000 notes and coins or a transit IC card ready.
From Aomori Station the JR bus to the Hakkoda Ropeway station takes about 80 min in winter (about 60 min in summer), JPY 1,290 one way. In winter part of the road is closed, so buses only run between Aomori and Sukayu Onsen, and the timetable changes with the season.
The ropeway takes about 10 min from the foot station to the summit park station. In winter you look down on 'snow monsters', Aomori todomatsu firs that grow huge coats of ice and snow. Adults (junior high and above) pay JPY 1,550 one way or JPY 2,500 return (elementary school children JPY 450 and JPY 700). The first ride is usually 9:00 and the last ride is 15:40 from mid-November to February. With about 80 min on the bus, work back from the last ride to pick your bus, and check the bus back to Aomori Station in advance.
- The ropeway stops in winds of 25 m/s or more or in bad weather, and it often stops in strong wind. Check the operating status on the official site before you go.
- If you land late in the afternoon, spend day 1 around Aomori Station and switch to the basic order: Hakkoda on the morning of day 2, then the airport bus from Aomori Station (skip Hirosaki in that case).
Day 1 evening: winter food and WA-RASSE around Aomori Station
For the night, the area around Aomori Station and the port is convenient. The airport bus, city buses and the Nebutan-go route bus all leave from the station, and on day 2 you board the JR Ou Line to Hirosaki at Aomori Station too.
For dinner, try Aomori ginger-miso oden, topped with a sauce of ginger and miso; it is a must in Aomori's cold winters. Kaiyaki miso, cooked in a scallop shell used as a pot, and Tsugaru niboshi ramen with its rich dried-sardine broth are also Aomori dishes.
If you are back from Hakkoda early, stop at the Nebuta Museum WA-RASSE, a 1-minute walk from the station. From September to April it is open 9:00–18:00 (last entry 17:30), adults JPY 620. It is closed on 31 December and 1 January.
Day 2: JR Ou Line to Hirosaki Castle, then the airport
Start with nokke-don, a rice bowl where you choose the sashimi and side dishes to pile on. From Aomori Station the JR Ou Line runs to Hirosaki Station in 29–41 minutes by limited express. Limited expresses and local trains stop at different stations; check JR East for times and fares.
Hirosaki Castle was the castle of the Tsugaru clan, lords of Hirosaki. Its three-tier keep, built in the Edo period and still standing, is one of the few such buildings left in Japan. The paid Honmaru and Kitanokuruwa area (adults JPY 320, children JPY 100) is free from 24 November to 31 March, so a winter visit costs nothing to enter. Viewing inside the keep has been suspended since 23 November 2025 (official notice, August 2026), so check official info.
In the apple town of Hirosaki, more than 40 places serve apple pie. When you are done, take the airport bus from Hirosaki Bus Terminal: about 55 min to the airport, JPY 1,600 (elementary school children JPY 800), payable by transit IC card, contactless credit card or cash.

Winter checks before you go
December to February is cold with heavy snow, so pack winter clothes and non-slip shoes. In winter, travel times and whether things run depend on the weather, so check the points below in advance.

- JR bus to Hakkoda: in winter it only runs between Aomori and Sukayu Onsen, and the timetable changes with the season.

- Airport shared taxi (reservation only): from 1 December to the end of February it costs JPY 3,000 per person to the Sannai Maruyama Site and JPY 3,500 to Shin-Aomori Station (JPY 2,500 and JPY 3,000 at other times). Book by 15:00 the day before.
- The free outdoor passage to 'Aomori-ken' at the Aomori Museum of Art closes when the snow starts.
- Year-end closures: WA-RASSE on 31 December and 1 January, the Sannai Maruyama Site from 30 December to 1 January.
