The short answer

Da Lat is a city in Vietnam's Central Highlands with cool weather all year, lakes, pine forests, flower gardens and French-era buildings. Lakeside walks, waterfalls, mountain views and the night market are what a trip there is about.

Nha Trang is a beach city in south-central Vietnam, loved for its long seafront, clear water, island boat trips and mud spas. Whether you stay on the city beachfront or at the resorts near the airport changes the feel of the trip a lot.

Who suits which: Da Lat if you want lake walks, a forest waterfall, the view from Langbiang Mountain and night-market street food in the cool highlands. Nha Trang if you want beach time, snorkeling on an island-hopping tour, a mud spa and seafood dinners. Da Lat feels completely different from the hot beach cities, so many travelers pair it with Nha Trang. That's why this post covers both how to choose and how to combine the two.

Airport to town, and getting between them

Da Lat's Lien Khuong Airport (DLI) is about 30 km south of town. The airport shuttle bus, a taxi or a ride-hailing car takes about 40-50 minutes to the center; check fares at the airport or in the app. Routes change by season, so check airline schedules.

Nha Trang's Cam Ranh International Airport (CXR) is also a fair way south of the city. A ride-hailing car or airport taxi takes about 40-50 minutes, and a cheap airport bus runs to the city beachfront. On departure day, allow plenty of time.

Between the two, the Da Lat guide describes a road option: fly into Nha Trang's Cam Ranh Airport (CXR) and come over the mountains to Da Lat by bus or private car, about 3-4 hours. The road is winding, so bring motion-sickness tablets. Locally, ride-hailing apps are easy in both places: the fare is fixed in advance, so there's no haggling.

How many days, and where to stay

Plan 3 to 4 days for Da Lat and 4 to 5 days for Nha Trang. In Da Lat, walk the center and use a day tour or a car with driver for spread-out sights such as waterfalls, temples and Langbiang Mountain. In Nha Trang, walk the beach promenade and restaurant streets, and use a ride-hailing motorbike for cheap short hops along the beachfront.

On a first visit to Da Lat, the center around Da Lat Market and Xuan Huong Lake puts the night market, restaurants and cafes within walking distance; it is busy and a little noisy in the evening. For quiet stays there is the area east of the lake near the old railway station, and for forest retreats and views, hillside resorts outside town, where you'll need a car to reach the center.

On a first visit to Nha Trang, the city beachfront (Tran Phu), lined with hotels, restaurants and cafes along the long beach, is walkable and has the most choice. The quieter north beach (around Hon Chong) is about 10-15 minutes by car from town; for resort stays there is Cam Ranh near the airport (30+ minutes by car to the city) or island resorts (Hon Tre and others) where you stay and play on the island.

What you do there: lakes and forest, the sea and Hon Chong

Da Lat is about highland scenery. Xuan Huong Lake in the middle of town is lovely for a morning walk or at sunset, and the forest Datanla Waterfall is reached by an alpine coaster on rails. A cable car glides over pine forest to the lakeside Truc Lam Monastery, and on Langbiang Mountain north of town you ride a jeep or walk up to the viewpoint for highland views (allow half a day).

Buildings and markets are sights too: the French-era art deco Old Da Lat Railway Station, Crazy House, shaped like a fairy-tale tree (paid entry, narrow stairs), and Linh Phuoc Pagoda, decorated with broken ceramics and glass (20-30 minutes by car from the center). The Da Lat Night Market opens every evening; it gets cold at night, so wear a jacket.

Nha Trang is about the sea. The long Nha Trang Beach is nicer early in the morning or at sunset than in the harsh midday sun, and an island-hopping boat tour brings snorkeling and beach time. Hon Chong Promontory, a cluster of seaside boulders, has fine coastal views, but the rocks can be slippery. There are also mud spas with warm mud baths and hot-spring soaks, the red-brick Po Nagar Cham Towers built by the ancient Cham kingdom, Long Son Pagoda with its white Buddha on the hill, and Dam Market.

Food and budget

Da Lat's food suits the cool weather: banh trang nuong, grilled rice paper with egg and toppings (about 20,000-40,000 dong); lau, a mushroom and vegetable hotpot (about 100,000-200,000 dong per person when shared); banh mi xiu mai, bread dipped in meatballs in tomato sauce for breakfast (about 20,000-40,000 dong); hot soy milk at the night market (about 10,000-20,000 dong); and strawberry and avocado desserts.

Nha Trang's food centers on the sea. Beachfront restaurants often charge for seafood by weight, so confirm the price per kilo and any cooking charges before ordering. Try nem nuong, grilled pork sausages wrapped in rice paper; bun cha ca and bun sua, clear noodle soups (about 30,000-50,000 VND at local spots); banh can, small rice-batter cakes; and condensed-milk or coconut coffee (about 30,000-60,000 VND).

Each city's guide gives the daily budgets per person below; pick the line that matches your travel style in each city. Markets and small shops in Da Lat take cash (dong), so check the zeros carefully when paying; at Dam Market in Nha Trang bargaining is normal, so carry small notes.

When to go: what each guide says about the seasons

The seasons below follow each city guide's own wording; check the official forecast for this year before you go. The Da Lat guide says the December-March dry season is clear and cool, the best time to visit, and that the May-October wet season brings frequent afternoon rain. Mornings and evenings are chilly year-round at this altitude, so bring a jacket.

The Nha Trang guide says January to August is mostly dry and good for the beach, with February to August the safest bet. It puts the rainy season at roughly September to December, with heavy rain most likely in October and November and occasional storms that can cancel island trips and boats. Prices rise during major holidays and the summer peak.

The months both guides rate as good overlap in January to March, and narrowing to Nha Trang's safest February to August leaves February and March. After rain, Da Lat's waterfall and mountain paths get slippery, so wear shoes with grip; in Nha Trang, book island tours early in your trip.

How to choose, and combining the two

Pick Da Lat for lake walks, forests and waterfalls, mountain views and the night market in the cool highlands; pick Nha Trang for beach time, island hopping, mud spas and seafood. The guides suggest 3 to 4 days for Da Lat and 4 to 5 days for Nha Trang, so weigh your dates too.

To combine them, use the road option via Nha Trang's Cam Ranh Airport (CXR): bus or private car over the mountains, about 3-4 hours. The Da Lat guide's Day 4 also ends with the airport or Nha Trang. The road is winding, so bring motion-sickness tablets, and check bus and private-car fares with the operator, as they vary.

If you plan to ride a motorbike yourself in either place, check license and insurance requirements. Vietnam's entry rules (visa-free stays, e-visas) can change, so check official information before you travel.
