Gyeongju at night: an evening route to Donggung Palace

An evening walk in Gyeongju timed to closing hours: Daereungwon and Cheomseongdae, then Donggung Palace and Wolji Pond, then Woljeonggyo and Gyochon.
Published
Short answer: Donggung early, the late-closing sights last
The heart of a Gyeongju evening is Donggung Palace and Wolji Pond, rated the city's top night-view spot. It is open 09:00–22:00, but last entry is 21:30, and it is busy with night-view visitors, so arriving close to last entry may mean you can't get in. This post orders the sights by their closing times, so your day flows into the night.
The city-centre sites are close together and linked on foot. From the Wolseong-dong Community Centre stop on bus 10 it is a 5–7 minute walk to Cheomseongdae and Daereungwon and 8–10 minutes to Donggung Palace. For the standard 2-day plan including Bulguksa and Seokguram, see the post below.
What stays open into the evening
Of the main city-centre sites, four can still be visited in the evening. Gyochon Village is open 24 hours, Woljeonggyo Bridge until 22:00, and Cheomseongdae until 22:00 in summer and 21:00 in winter. Donggung Palace and Wolji Pond is open until 22:00, with last entry at 21:30.
Other places need to be done in daylight. Gyeongju National Museum closes at 18:00 on weekdays and 19:00 on weekends and holidays. Check the opening hours for Daereungwon and Cheonmachong in official information. Hours can change, so check again before you go.
- Gyochon Village: 24 hours, free
- Woljeonggyo Bridge: 09:00–22:00, free
- Cheomseongdae: 09:00–22:00 in summer, 09:00–21:00 in winter, free
- Donggung Palace and Wolji Pond: 09:00–22:00 (last entry 21:30), KRW 3,000 for adults
- Gyeongju National Museum: weekdays 10:00–18:00, weekends and holidays 10:00–19:00
- Daereungwon and Cheonmachong: check official hours
Late afternoon: start at the museum or Daereungwon
Fill the daytime before the night route with the places that close early. Gyeongju National Museum holds artefacts of Silla (57 BC–AD 935) in the Silla History Gallery and Silla Art Gallery, and is free except paid special exhibitions. It is closed on 1 January, Seollal and Chuseok days, and the first Monday of March and November, so check the date.
Then head to Daereungwon, the tombs of Silla kings, queens and nobles, part of the Gyeongju Historic Areas listed by UNESCO in 2000. Cheonmachong, excavated in 1973, is the only tomb with its interior open to visitors. Daereungwon is free; Cheonmachong costs KRW 3,000 for adults.

- Gyeongju National Museum: free except paid special exhibitions; closes 18:00 on weekdays, 19:00 on weekends and holidays
- Daereungwon: free / Cheonmachong: KRW 3,000 for adults
From dusk: Cheomseongdae, Donggung, then Woljeonggyo and Gyochon
Cheomseongdae, near Daereungwon, is an observatory about 9 m tall from the reign of Queen Seondeok (632–647), built of 365 stones. In winter it closes at 21:00, so visit it before Donggung Palace.
Next comes Donggung Palace and Wolji Pond. The key to this route is getting in early in the evening so you are not racing last entry (21:30). After the night view, finish at Woljeonggyo Bridge, open until 22:00, and Gyochon Village, open 24 hours. Leave some slack for the walk from Donggung to Gyochon.
Gyochon is a hanok village with the house of the Gyeongju Choi clan, who kept their wealth for 12 generations. Next to it, Woljeonggyo recreates the bridge that linked Wolseong and Namsan in 760; completed in April 2018, it is Korea's largest wooden bridge. You can also follow the standard order, Gyochon and Woljeonggyo first and Donggung last, but then keep a close eye on last entry.

- Late afternoon: Gyeongju National Museum, or Daereungwon and Cheonmachong
- Dusk: Cheomseongdae (closes 21:00 in winter, 22:00 in summer)
- Early evening: Donggung Palace and Wolji Pond (last entry 21:30)
- To finish: Woljeonggyo (until 22:00) and Gyochon Village (24 hours)
Donggung Palace and Wolji Pond: Gyeongju's top night view
Donggung was a secondary palace where the crown prince lived and banquets were held. King Munmu dug the pond with three islands in 674. Gyeongju City also lists the lotus at Donggung Palace and Wolji Pond as a summer flower spot; check timing on the city tourism site's flower calendar.
Admission is KRW 3,000 for adults. It is busy with night-view visitors, and arriving close to last entry (21:30) may mean you can't get in, so plan your evening backwards from this stop.
Getting back at night and where to stay
To walk back after the night route, stay in the city centre, which suits a first visit and walking the heritage sites. If you stay at Bomun Lake Resort, with its lakeside hotels and condos, bus 10 stops at most of the hotels.
Buses 10 and 11 run from 06:00 to a last bus at 21:40 (from the terminal), about every 20 minutes. The last-bus time is from the terminal, so check the time at your stop with the Gyeongju traffic information centre (its.gyeongju.go.kr) in advance. City bus fares are flat regardless of distance: KRW 1,300 for regular buses, KRW 50 off with a transit card.
If you want to see Bulguksa and Seokguram early the next day, the area around Bulguksa is another option. If you came by train, book tickets to 'Gyeongju': the station was renamed from Singyeongju on 28 December 2023. Check timetables and fares with Korail (letskorail.com).
