The one-line verdict
Haikou is the capital of Hainan Province on the north of Hainan Island, nicknamed 'Coconut City' for its mix of sea and palm trees. It pairs city walks with nature: the Nanyang-style arcades of Qilou Old Street, historic sites like the Five Officials Temple, a volcanic-crater geopark and mangrove forests.
Sanya is a tropical beach city at the southern tip of Hainan Island that stays warm even in winter. Relax on beaches like Yalong Bay, Dadonghai and Sanya Bay, then take in the Luhuitou lookout, the boulder coast of Tianya Haijiao and Nanshan's 108 m Guanyin statue — ideal for beach breaks and family trips.
Who each suits: Haikou, if you want old-town walks and historic sites plus nature such as volcanoes and mangroves. Sanya, if you want to rest at a beach resort, swim and take an island trip.
Airport to the city, and getting around
At Haikou Meilan International Airport (HAK), airport buses leave from outside Gate 4 of the T1 arrivals hall (Gate 3 on T2's ground-floor arrivals) and cost about 20 CNY. From Meilan Station, the airport's own rail station, trains reach Haikou East in about 9 minutes, and there is a taxi rank and a ride-hailing pickup area. Routes and times can change, so check the airport's official information.
At Sanya Phoenix International Airport (SYX), airport buses leave from opposite Gate 5 in the domestic arrivals hall. Line 1 runs to Sanya Bay, downtown, Dadonghai and Yalong Bay, Line 2 goes east to Haitang Bay, and fares are up to about 25 CNY depending on distance. Phoenix Airport Station sits right next to the airport, linked by a covered walkway, and by taxi Sanya Bay is about 15 minutes, Dadonghai about 25 and Yalong Bay about 30.
Getting around differs too. Haikou has city buses (from about 1 CNY up to about 5-6 CNY), a city train and metered taxis. Sanya has 132 bus routes (mostly about 2-12 CNY), a tram linking downtown with Sanya Railway Station (about 3 CNY), metered taxis and a tourist railway linking the city with Nanshan, Tianya Haijiao and Yazhou. In both cities, buy train tickets through China Railway's official booking with your passport.
How many days, and what it costs
The Haikou guide suggests 3 to 4 days and the Sanya guide 4 to 5 days. Haikou's plan runs Qilou Old Street and the Haikou Bay lights, the Five Officials Temple and Hainan Museum, then the volcanic crater and the mangroves (or a Holiday Beach sunset). Sanya's plan runs Dadonghai beach and Luhuitou, Tianya Haijiao and Nanshan, Yalong Bay or Wuzhizhou Island, then a downtown market.
The daily budgets below are each guide's own per-person figures, listed as they are. They depend on where you stay and what you do, so use them to match your travel style rather than to rank the two cities.
- Haikou budget: about 300 CNY per day (budget lodging, rice noodles, buses and trains)
- Haikou mid-range: about 700-1,000 CNY per day (city hotel, restaurants, taxis, entry fees)
- Haikou comfortable: about 2,000 CNY+ per day (upscale hotel, seafood dinners, car with driver)
- Sanya budget: about 300-400 CNY per day (downtown lodging, rice noodles, city buses)
- Sanya mid-range: about 800-1,200 CNY per day (beach hotel, seafood restaurants, taxis, entry fees)
- Sanya comfortable: about 2,500 CNY+ per day (upscale beach resort, island trips, car with driver)
When to go: seasons and weather
The two guides recommend the same months. The Haikou guide calls November to April the dry season, best for walking and sightseeing, and the Sanya guide says November to April brings steady sunshine and clear water, the best time for beaches and swimming.
The Haikou figures below are 1991–2020 normals from the China Meteorological Administration submission · WMO normals collection (NOAA NCEI), Haikou station (high/low temperature and monthly rainfall). For Sanya, this section follows the Sanya guide's season notes instead of figures; check official weather information for monthly temperatures and rainfall before you go.
The Haikou guide says May to October is the rainy season, bringing about 80% of the year's rain, and midsummer is very hot. The Sanya guide says summer (June-August) is hot with short afternoon showers that come often. Both guides warn about typhoons in August-September, so check the forecast then.
Spring Festival and National Day week (around October 1) are very crowded in both cities. The sun is strong all year, so pack sunscreen and a hat.
- Haikou January: 21°C/16°C, 24 mm
- Haikou March: 27°C/20°C, 43 mm
- Haikou April: 30°C/23°C, 80 mm
- Haikou July: 33°C/26°C, 248 mm
- Haikou August: 33°C/26°C, 293 mm
- Haikou October: 29°C/24°C, 274 mm
- Haikou December: 22°C/18°C, 38 mm
What to see and eat
Haikou mixes city walks and nature. In town you can see Qilou Old Street, with nearly 600 arcade buildings built in the 1920s-30s by Hainanese returning from Southeast Asia; the Five Officials Temple, built in 1889; Hainan Museum, free but booked online with your real name and closed Mondays except public holidays; and the Haikou Bay promenade with Century Bridge at dusk. Beyond the center are the Ma'an crater in the Haikou Volcanic Cluster Global Geopark, home to 40 volcanoes, the Dongzhai Port mangroves, where you watch birds by boat or from the boardwalk, and Holiday Beach for sunsets.
Sanya centers on its beaches. Snorkel or kayak at Yalong Bay beach, known as 'the best bay under heaven', swim and sunbathe at Dadonghai beach near downtown, and watch the sunset from the Sanya Bay palm promenade. Luhuitou Scenic Area looks over Sanya Bay, Dadonghai and Yulin Bay, and Tianya Haijiao, about 26 km west of the city, has huge granite boulders carved with Qing-dynasty inscriptions. There is also the 108 m Guanyin statue at Nanshan Cultural Tourism Zone, Yazhou Ancient City dating back to the Western Han dynasty, and Wuzhizhou Island off Haitang Bay (reached by speedboat; sailings may change in rough seas).
Some food overlaps: both guides feature Hainan rice noodles and qingbuliang. Haikou adds liangcha, coconut sticky rice rolls and night-market grills and seafood, while Sanya adds Wenchang chicken, coconut chicken hot pot, Hele crab and Dongshan goat, and market seafood cooked to order at a nearby restaurant. In both cities, choose seafood where prices are marked.

How to choose, or do both
Choose Haikou for old streets, historic sites and nature such as volcanoes and mangroves; choose Sanya to rest at a beach resort, swim and take an island trip. Both guides describe the round-island high-speed railway linking the two cities. The Haikou guide says some trains from Haikou East to Sanya Station take about 1 hour 46 minutes, and the Sanya guide gives about 1 hour 30 minutes to 2 hours to Haikou. From Meilan Station at Haikou's airport, the eastern ring high-speed line also runs via Wenchang and Boao to Sanya.
To do both, plan by adding the two guides' suggested stays (3 to 4 days for Haikou, 4 to 5 days for Sanya). The Haikou guide's last day also suggests continuing around the island to Sanya by high-speed train from Haikou East. Book train tickets with your passport, and since typhoons can halt trains, check the forecast.
- Entry conditions, including visa-free stay periods, can change: check official Chinese government or embassy information before you go
- Some foreign apps and services may be restricted in China: sort out your connection (roaming, eSIM, etc.) and a map app in advance
- Swim only in designated areas with lifeguards, and never at night or after drinking
- Opening hours, fees and boat sailings can change, so check official information
