The short answer

Ho Chi Minh City is Vietnam's biggest and busiest city, mixing swirling motorbike traffic, French colonial buildings and a buzzing cafe culture. It suits travelers who want great food, coffee and spas on a small budget, and the Cu Chi Tunnels and the Mekong Delta are easy day trips.

Bangkok's highlights are glittering temples and royal palaces, famous street food, rooftop bars and giant malls. Great-value hotels and massages make it a fit for first-timers, friends and families alike.

Best for: Ho Chi Minh City suits travelers who want pho, coffee and spas plus Vietnam War history and nearby trips like the Mekong Delta. Bangkok suits those who want a mix of palaces and temples, street food, massages and shopping.

Day one: airport transfer, SIM and cash

From Tan Son Nhat (SGN) to District 1, a ride-hailing app is the easiest option: the fare is fixed in the app and you meet the driver at the designated pickup zone. Bus 109 links the airport with the Saigon Bus Station at 23/9 Park (near Ben Thanh Market and Pham Ngu Lao). It now runs from domestic Terminal T3 and no longer stops at the international terminal (T2), so take the inter-terminal shuttle to T3 if you arrive internationally.

At Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi (BKK), the Airport Rail Link runs to Makkasan (MRT transfer) and Phaya Thai (BTS transfer); it avoids traffic, so it is the most reliable way into the city. For a metered taxi, take a queue ticket at the official taxi stand on level 1; expect a 50 THB airport surcharge plus expressway tolls on top of the meter. If you land at Don Mueang (DMK), use the SRT Red Line or the A1 airport bus.

Both airports sell SIMs and eSIMs. In Ho Chi Minh City, activate one on arrival so you can use a ride-hailing app; for Bangkok, you can also set up an eSIM before you fly. In Ho Chi Minh City, change money at banks or licensed exchange counters; Thai ATMs charge a fee per foreign-card withdrawal, so withdraw larger amounts less often.

How many days, and what budget?

Plan on 4 to 5 days for Ho Chi Minh City and 3 to 5 days for Bangkok. The Ho Chi Minh City plan spends a day on central sights (Independence Palace, the Central Post Office, the War Remnants Museum), a day on a half-day Cu Chi Tunnels tour and Ben Thanh Market, a full day in the Mekong Delta, and a day of District 3 cafe hopping. The Bangkok plan has a palace-and-temples day, a Siam and Jim Thompson House day, Chatuchak Market on a weekend or Ayutthaya on a weekday, and a slow day in Sukhumvit.

Below are the budget tiers for each city, in local currency. The two cities use different currencies, so we do not compare them.

Month-by-month weather, side by side

These are 1991–2020 normals: for Ho Chi Minh City, Ho Chi Minh City (WMO city data) from the WMO World Weather Information Service — Viet Nam Meteorological and Hydrological Administration; for Bangkok, Bangkok Metropolis station from the Thai Meteorological Department submission · WMO normals collection (NOAA NCEI). The list below puts the same months side by side: high/low temperature and monthly rainfall.

In Ho Chi Minh City, the December to April dry season is the best time, with December to February slightly less hot. In Bangkok, November to February is the cool, dry season and the most comfortable time. In the normals, December to February brings little rain in both cities, about 8-41 mm a month, with highs of about 32-34°C.

March and April split the two. Ho Chi Minh City is still in its dry season, with about 18 mm and 57 mm of rain. Bangkok is very hot from March to May, and in the normals Bangkok's April high of about 36°C is the highest of the year. Songkran, the mid-April water festival, is fun but crowded and pricier.

From May to October both cities get about 190 mm of rain or more each month, and September is the wettest month of the year in both (about 273 mm in Ho Chi Minh City, about 336 mm in Bangkok). In Ho Chi Minh City afternoon downpours are short; in Bangkok, June to October brings short, heavy afternoon downpours. November has less rain than October: about 128 mm in Ho Chi Minh City and about 45 mm in Bangkok. Many shops in Ho Chi Minh City close around Tet (Lunar New Year, January or February), so check dates.

Ho Chi Minh City: District 1 on foot, Cu Chi Tunnels, Mekong Delta

Central District 1 is very walkable. Independence Palace, the former presidential palace and symbol of the war's end in 1975, includes basement bunkers; the Central Post Office and Notre Dame Cathedral, French colonial landmarks, stand side by side (the cathedral interior may be restricted during restoration). Ben Thanh Market, where haggling is expected, and Nguyen Hue Walking Street, running from City Hall to the Saigon River, are close by. The War Remnants Museum is heavy going, so allow about two hours.

The Cu Chi Tunnels, a wartime tunnel network, are about 1.5 hours away by road and usually visited on a half-day tour. A Mekong Delta day trip takes you by boat through canals, orchards and coconut-candy workshops around My Tho or Ben Tre; plan a full day.

Food highlights are pho (about 50,000-90,000 VND at local shops), banh mi (about 20,000-50,000 VND), com tam with grilled pork chop (about 40,000-70,000 VND) and condensed-milk or coconut coffee (about 30,000-60,000 VND). To cross the street, walk slowly and steadily without running and traffic will flow around you.

Bangkok: Grand Palace, Wat Arun and Ayutthaya

The Grand Palace and Wat Phra Kaew charge foreign visitors an entry fee (check the official site for the current price). A strict dress code applies, so cover shoulders and knees and go early in the morning. Wat Pho, home of the 46 m golden Reclining Buddha and a famous Thai massage school, is a 10-minute walk from the Grand Palace. Cross to Wat Arun by small ferry from the pier near Wat Pho; it looks best at sunset from the opposite bank.

There is also Chatuchak Weekend Market on Saturdays and Sundays, Chinatown (Yaowarat) with its street-food stalls after dark, and Jim Thompson House on a guided tour. UNESCO-listed Ayutthaya is a day trip about 1.5 hours away by train or tour. For the riverside Grand Palace and Wat Arun, the Chao Phraya Express Boat is practical and scenic.

Food highlights are pad thai and som tam (about 60-100 THB a plate from street stalls), tom yum goong (about 150-350 THB in restaurants), khao man gai (about 50-80 THB) and mango sticky rice (about 100-150 THB). Agree on a tuk-tuk price before getting in.

How to choose, and what to check before you go

From December to February both cities have little rain, so either works. In March and April, remember that Ho Chi Minh City is still in its dry season while Bangkok is in its very hot months. If palaces, temples and shopping come first, pick Bangkok; if cafes, war history and a Mekong Delta outing come first, pick Ho Chi Minh City.

Entry and visa rules vary by nationality and can change. Check official Vietnamese and Thai government information before you travel.
