The big picture: 2 days in Medan + 1-2 nights at Lake Toba

The guide recommends 3 nights for Medan: 2 days in the city and 1-2 nights at Lake Toba. The first two days are walking days around Kesawan near Medan Station and around Maimun Palace and the Grand Mosque; the last two take you via Berastagi to Lake Toba and Samosir Island and back.

The airport train timetable, fares, tickets and the way to Lake Toba are covered in detail in a separate article. This one focuses on what to group on each day, where to stay, budget and timing.

Day 1: Medan Station, Merdeka Square, Kesawan, Tjong A Fie Mansion

From Kualanamu Airport (KNO), the airport train takes about 42-44 minutes to Medan Station. Merdeka Square sits right next to the station, and Kesawan, the city's oldest district, is close by, so the first day works well on foot.

Kesawan was rebuilt with Chinese shophouses and Dutch colonial buildings after a great fire in 1890. On this street you'll find the London Sumatra Building (1906), the first building in Medan with a lift, and the Warenhuis (1918), the city's first department store building.

The Tjong A Fie Mansion on Jalan Ahmad Yani in Kesawan was built around 1900 by the wealthy merchant Tjong A Fie and mixes Chinese, Malay and European styles. It opened as a museum on 18 June 2009 and keeps its original furniture, family photos and altar. End the day with soto Medan, a coconut-milk soup scented with lemongrass, turmeric and coriander seed.

Day 2: Maimun Palace, Grand Mosque, Sri Mariamman Temple, Velangkanni

Start with lontong Medan, a breakfast favorite in the city. In the morning head to Maimun Palace on Jalan Brigjen Katamso. Construction began in 1888 under Sultan Ma'mun Al Rasyid, the ninth ruler of the Deli Sultanate, and finished in 1891; it blends Malay, Islamic, Indian and European styles, and you can rent traditional Malay costume for photos inside. The tourism ministry says it opens daily 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.; confirm hours and fees on site.

Walk from the palace to the Grand Mosque on Jalan Sisingamangaraja. Begun in 1906, it held its first Friday prayer on 10 September 1909 and has an octagonal plan topped with black domes. It is an active place of worship, so dress modestly.

Next is the Sri Mariamman Temple in Kampung Madras (Little India). Built in 1884, it is Medan's oldest Hindu temple, decorated with colorful South Indian Dravidian-style carvings. From there take a taxi to Graha Maria Annai Velangkanni in the Medan Tuntungan district (Tanjung Selamat): it looks like an Indian temple but is a Catholic shrine to the Virgin Mary, dedicated on 1 October 2005. Dinner is mie balap, named for the way cooks stir-fry it fast over a wood fire.

Days 3-4: Berastagi, a night at Lake Toba, Samosir Island

Leave early on day 3. First stop is Berastagi, a town at 1,300 m in the Karo highlands, for Gundaling Hill and the fruit market. It is a cool 17-20°C, and Gundaling Hill gives views of the Sinabung and Sibayak volcanoes. Check official volcano activity updates before you go.

Then see Sipiso-piso Waterfall (120 m) at the northern tip of Lake Toba and spend the night by the lake. At 1,145 km² and 450 m deep, Lake Toba is Southeast Asia's largest lake; the lakeside town of Parapat is 176 km from Medan, about 4-5 hours by road.

On day 4, take a boat to Samosir Island to visit Batak villages such as Tuk Tuk, Tomok and Ambarita, then drive back to Medan in the afternoon (about 4-5 hours). Pick up bika ambon, Medan's classic souvenir, on the way. With one more day, do as the guide suggests and make it 2 nights at Lake Toba.

Where to stay, getting around and budget

In Medan, first-timers are best off in Kesawan & Merdeka Square around Medan Station, where the airport train arrives. For sultanate heritage and history walks, choose Medan Maimun around the palace and Grand Mosque; for Hindu temples and Indian heritage, Kampung Madras. June-August is peak season at Lake Toba, so book lakeside stays early.

Walking and angkot (minibuses, also called Sudako) keep city transport cheap. Angkot are basic, though, and easiest if you know a little Indonesian so you don't miss your stop. The tourism ministry warns of frequent traffic jams in Medan, so allow extra time.

The only figure in the guide's budget is the airport train at about IDR 50,000-70,000 one way (varies by departure time; official booking site, checked October 2026; may include a promotion, check official). Taxis and becak have no official fare table, so agree on prices before riding, and adding 1-2 nights at Lake Toba means a hired car or a domestic flight. Accommodation is most of the budget, so compare prices for your dates on booking sites.

When to go, and a pre-trip checklist

Indonesia's tourism ministry names the April-October dry season as the best time for Lake Toba and says heavy rain and strong winds in the November-March rainy season can disrupt plans. June-August is peak season.

For reference, 1991-2020 normals from the Belawan Maritime Meteorological Station (Medan Belawan district; Indonesian Agency for Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics (BMKG) submission, WMO normals collection, NOAA NCEI) show daytime highs of about 31-32°C all year and lows of about 24-25°C in the months with data. February is the driest month at about 54 mm and October the wettest at about 242 mm. These are coastal Medan readings, not Lake Toba, so the lake's weather can differ.

The Sri Mariamman Temple celebrates Thaipusam and Deepavali every year; check official sources for dates. Entry requirements (visas etc.) depend on your nationality, so check the Indonesian government's official information. Korea's Ministry of Foreign Affairs rates North Sumatra, where Medan is, at level 1 (exercise caution) and neighboring Aceh to the north at level 2 (avoid non-essential travel); check your own government's current travel advice before you go.
