Naha Airport (OKA) to Naha and Beyond

Naha Airport (OKA) to Kokusai-dori by Yui Rail or taxi, limousine buses to northern resorts and rental car pickup: times, fares and getting to each area.
Published · Updated
Naha Airport (OKA) is your gateway to Okinawa
An Okinawa trip starts at Naha Airport (OKA). When you book, check which airport is on your ticket and make sure it says Naha (OKA).
There are three main ways out of the airport: the Yui Rail monorail from Naha Airport Station to stations near Kokusai-dori (about 13-16 minutes, about 300 yen), taxis to central Naha (about 15 minutes) and airport limousine buses to major resorts up north (over 1 hour), and a rental car picked up at an office near the airport after a shuttle bus ride.
The right choice depends on where you are staying and whether you rent a car. Below we cover each option and how to reach each hotel area. All times and fares are approximate, so double-check them with the official transport information.
Yui Rail: Naha Airport Station to Kokusai-dori
The Yui Rail monorail runs from Naha Airport Station to Kencho-mae and Makishi, the stations near Kokusai-dori. The ride takes about 13-16 minutes and costs about 300 yen. It is the easiest option if you stay in Naha.
The monorail links the airport, central Naha and Shuri, so you can manage without a car in Naha. IC cards work.
Check first and last train times with the official Yui Rail information before you fly.
Taxis and airport limousine buses
Taxis are quick to central Naha, about 15 minutes. Fares are metered, so check the official information for costs. Taxis are convenient for short hops in Naha, but long rides north get expensive.
Airport limousine buses serve major resorts up north. The ride takes over 1 hour. Check bus routes and times with the official information before you go, and confirm whether the bus goes to your hotel.
Local buses also reach sights in the north, but they are infrequent and slow. If you plan to see the north without a car, day bus tours that bundle sights are easier.
Rental car: a shuttle bus to offices near the airport
A rental car is the standard way to explore Okinawa. From Naha Airport, take a shuttle bus to a rental office nearby and pick up your car there. The shuttle takes about 10-20 minutes, and costs vary by company, car and season.
Offices get busy in peak season, so book ahead. Japan drives on the left with the steering wheel on the right. Most foreign drivers need an International Driving Permit alongside their home license and passport; check the rules for your country before you go.
With a car you can head straight north. The Motobu Peninsula, near Churaumi Aquarium and Kouri Island, is about two hours' drive from the airport, so staying a night or two is worthwhile. Driving across the long Kouri Bridge over the sea is a highlight in itself. Licenses and returning the car are covered in detail in the rental car article linked at the end.

Getting to each hotel area
Which option suits you depends on where you are staying. Here are the main hotel areas and how to reach each from the airport.

- Naha, around Kokusai-dori (first visit, car-free trips): close to the airport, with Yui Rail to Kencho-mae and Makishi stations. Plenty of restaurants and shops open late
- South, around Nanjo (quiet sea views): fairly close to the airport. Fewer tourists, with seaside cafés and sacred sites
- Chatan, American Village (shopping, sunsets): halfway between Naha and the north, a handy base for a road trip
- Onna resort coast (family resort stays): a west-coast strip of beach resorts near Cape Manzamo. If you plan to take an airport limousine bus, check the official information to see whether it goes to your hotel
- Motobu Peninsula (aquarium, northern sights): near Churaumi Aquarium and Kouri Island. About two hours' drive from the airport, so stay a night or two
