The big picture: one day for the palace, two for the tombs
The guide suggests 3 days and 2 nights in Shenyang. This route covers Mukden Palace and Zhongjie on day 1, Zhang Xueliang's Former Residence, Beiling Park (Zhaoling Tomb) and Laobeishi on day 2, and Dongling Park (Fuling Tomb) plus one museum on day 3. Mukden Palace, the Fuling Tomb and the Zhaoling Tomb are all World Heritage sites, which is why Shenyang is called the 'birthplace of a dynasty, city of two generations of emperors', and this plan spreads them over three days.
The metro is the backbone of the route. Line 2 serves the airport, Qingniandajie, Shenyang North Station and Beilinggongyuan; Line 1 serves Donglinggongyuan, Zhongjie, Huaiyuanmen, Qingniandajie and Shenyang Station. You can change between the two lines at Qingniandajie.
All visitors to Mukden Palace must book in advance under their real name. Foreign visitors book with their passport and must show the same original passport at entry. Use the palace's official booking channels.
Day 1: Airport → Mukden Palace → Zhongjie and the Khan's Palace site → dumplings
Shenyang Taoxian International Airport (SHE) has its own Metro Line 2 station, Taoxianjichang (Taoxian Airport). Take Line 2, change to Line 1 at Qingniandajie and get off at Zhongjie; Mukden Palace is a 10-minute walk from there. Check official information for journey times and fares.
First built in 1625, Mukden Palace covers about 60,000 m² with 114 Qing-era buildings (over 500 rooms). The east route has the octagonal Dazheng Hall and the Ten Kings Pavilions, the middle route Chongzheng Hall, Phoenix Tower and Qingning Palace, and the west route Wensu Pavilion, which held the Siku Quanshu. It is open 8:30–17:00 (last entry 16:15) from 10 April to 10 October and 9:00–16:30 (last entry 15:45) from 11 October to 9 April, and closed on Mondays from 11 October to 9 April (except public holidays). This is an afternoon visit, so mind the last entry. Check official information for ticket prices.
Leaving the palace, walk north along Zhongjie, a busy shopping street. On North Zhongjie lies the Khan's Palace site, once the bedchamber of Nurhaci, founder of the Qing; first built in 1625, it was found during redevelopment in 2012, and the restored bedchamber is now open next to the site exhibition hall. For dinner, have Shenyang dumplings (jiaozi), first on the city's list of 18 signature dishes.

Day 2: Zhang Xueliang's Former Residence → Beiling Park (Zhaoling Tomb) → Laobeishi → Xita Street
In the morning, visit Zhang Xueliang's Former Residence, his official residence and home, built from 1914 on a 53,000 m² site, with three-courtyard siheyuan, the Big and Small Green Buildings and Zhao Yidi's former residence. The address is 46 Shaoshuaifu Lane, Chaoyang Street, Shenhe District, and it is easy to combine on foot with the Zhongjie area north of Mukden Palace. Check official information for hours and fees.
Next, take Metro Line 2 to Beilinggongyuan for Beiling Park. The 3.3 km² park, opened as a park in 1927, surrounds the Zhaoling Tomb of Emperor Hong Taiji and Empress Xiaoduanwen. The tomb keeps 38 historic buildings and groups and became World Heritage in 2004.
In the afternoon, head to Laobeishi, a district that grew around Shisheng Temple, the imperial temple Hong Taiji ordered built in 1636, with heritage sites such as the Xibe family temple and Taiping Temple. It is a national 4A tourist attraction and a national night-time culture and tourism cluster, listed among the sights along Metro Line 2. In the evening, have cold noodles on Xita Street, which the city lists among the sights along Metro Line 1. Shenyang has a large ethnic Korean population, and Korean dishes such as cold noodles are an everyday part of local meals: chewy noodles in a beef broth, in salty or sweet-and-sour versions.

Day 3: Dongling Park (Fuling Tomb) → one museum → the airport
In the morning, take Metro Line 1 to Donglinggongyuan, a station on the eastern extension of Line 1 opened in June 2025. Dongling Park is made up of the Fuling Tomb of Nurhaci and Empress Xiaocigao and a forested country park behind it. The address is 210 Dongling Road, Hunnan District.
In the afternoon, choose one of two museums. The Liaoning Provincial Museum is a provincial museum with 22 halls on three floors and nearly 120,000 objects (over 60,000 of them precious), close to Shengbowuguan Station. Check official information for hours and closing days. The "September 18" History Museum is a national first-grade museum near Liutiaohu, where the September 18 Incident began; the address is 46 Wanghua South Street, Dadong District, and it is listed among the sights along Metro Line 10. Every year on 18 September, sirens sound and a bell is struck 14 times.
Check the official information before you go for how to get from Dongling Park to the museum. After the museum, leave plenty of time for the airport. For your remaining meals, try more dishes from the city's signature list: jijia (chicken rack), kebabs (kaochuan) and Xinmin blood sausage.

Where to stay and getting around
For a first visit, Fangcheng and Zhongjie (Shenhe District) is the easy choice: it is centred on Mukden Palace, with Zhongjie shopping street, the Khan's Palace site and Zhang Xueliang's Former Residence nearby, and you get off at Zhongjie on Metro Line 1. For imperial tomb walks and parkland, the area around Beiling Park, home to the Zhaoling Tomb, also works; get off at Beilinggongyuan on Metro Line 2. Check booking sites for room rates.
Metro Lines 1, 2, 3, 4, 9 and 10 run. From 1 April to 31 October 2026, last trains on Lines 1, 2, 4, 9 and 10 leave at 23:00 in both directions, and on Line 3 at 20:00. Check official information for hours from November. Since June 2024, staffed ticket windows at 20 metro stations, including the airport and Zhongjie, accept overseas bank cards, but carry some cash in case a payment fails.
- Airport bus (Shenyang Station / Shenyang North Station): per the Shenyang Transport Bureau timetable (posted May 2026), it leaves the Taoxian Airport bus station (in front of T3, waiting hall in the lobby of parking building A) every 40 minutes from 9:30 and runs via Wulihe, Dianshitai and Maluwan to Shenyang Station. Route length 36 km, CNY 15. Check the official timetable for the last departure
- City buses: many buses, including the Ring Line (Huanlu), 118 and 132, stop near Mukden Palace. Get off at Shenyang Fangcheng · Palace West Huamen or East Huamen and walk 5 minutes
- Taxis: metered. Handy with heavy luggage, for a late arrival and for outlying sights such as Dongling Park. Have your hotel address and destinations ready in Chinese
Budget, when to go and final checks
The airport bus costs CNY 15. Check official information for metro fares and admission to Mukden Palace and other sights, and check booking sites for rooms and meals, which vary by date. Cheap lodging, local eateries and the metro and buses keep costs down; a city hotel, restaurants, taxis and entry fees make a mid-range trip.
May and September are the best months for walking.
