The capital of Liaoning Province in China's northeast, home to the palace the Qing dynasty used before it made Beijing its capital. Mukden Palace (first built in 1625), the Fuling Tomb of Nurhaci and the Zhaoling Tomb of Hong Taiji are all World Heritage sites, earning the city the name 'birthplace of a dynasty, city of two generations of emperors'. A good fit if you like old palaces and imperial tombs, modern history and northeastern food such as dumplings and cold noodles.
