Toyama vs Kanazawa: Which Should You Choose First?

Toyama with its trams, canal and Alpine Route, or Kanazawa with its gardens and old streets? Airport transfers, days, budgets and same-month weather compared.
Published
The short answer
Toyama is a Hokuriku city between Toyama Bay to the north and the 3,000 m-class Tateyama mountain range to the southeast. Trams take you to Toyama Castle and the Glass Art Museum, and a canal cruise runs to Iwase, an old port town of the Kitamaebune trading ships. With an extra day, you can head into the mountains on the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route.
Kanazawa, also in the Hokuriku region, preserves old teahouse streets, samurai residences and Kenrokuen, counted among Japan's three great gardens. It's also known for fresh Sea of Japan seafood and gold-leaf crafts.
Best for: Toyama suits travelers who want an easy city trip by tram plus a canal cruise, Alpine Route mountain scenery, Toyama Bay sushi and masu-zushi. Kanazawa suits those who want garden walks, old teahouse and samurai streets, market seafood and a Shirakawa-go day trip.

Getting there and airport to city
From Toyama Airport, the airport bus (Toyama Airport Line) run by Toyama Chiho Railway goes to Toyama Station. The flat fare is JPY 470, and seating is limited to the number of seats, so you cannot board when it is full. Notes of JPY 2,000 or more cannot be used on board or at the airport ticket machine, so have JPY 1,000 notes and coins ready (contactless credit cards are accepted). The taxi rank is right outside the domestic arrivals lobby.
Kanazawa's air gateway is Komatsu Airport (KMQ) in neighboring Komatsu city, with buses to Kanazawa Station timed to arrivals. From Kansai Airport (KIX), take the Haruka to Shin-Osaka (or Kyoto), the Thunderbird to Tsuruga, then change to the Hokuriku Shinkansen.
If you travel via Tokyo, both guides give times from Tokyo Station: 2 hours 5 min at the fastest to Toyama, and about 2 hours 30 min to 3 hours to Kanazawa on the Hokuriku Shinkansen. Check flight schedules with the airlines.
- Toyama airport bus (Toyama Airport Line): JPY 470 flat fare to Toyama Station (check the official timetable)
- Toyama taxi: about 20 min to Toyama Station (9.2 km), about JPY 3,000 (the airport website's estimate)
- Kanazawa, Komatsu Airport bus: about 40 min to Kanazawa Station, about ¥1,200-1,400
- Kansai Airport → Kanazawa (limited express + Hokuriku Shinkansen): about 3-4 hours (check official routes and fares)
- Tokyo Station → Kanazawa Station (Hokuriku Shinkansen): about 2 hours 30 min to 3 hours, about ¥14,000-15,000
- Tokyo Station → Toyama: 2 hours 5 min at the fastest (check times and fares on the JR websites)
How many days and what budget
The guides suggest 2 to 3 days for Toyama (with the Alpine Route) and 3 days for Kanazawa (4 with Shirakawa-go).
In Toyama, take the airport bus to Toyama Station on day 1 and ride the loop-line tram to Toyama Castle (Folk Museum), the City Hall observation tower and the Glass Art Museum; on day 2 see Kansui Park and the Museum of Art and Design, then take the Fugan Suijo Line to Iwase. With an extra day, add the Alpine Route or Yatsuo. In Kanazawa, plan Omicho Market and Higashi Chaya on day 1, Kenrokuen, Kanazawa Castle Park, the 21st Century Museum and the Nagamachi Samurai District on day 2, and a Shirakawa-go day trip on day 3.
The two guides present budgets differently. The Kanazawa guide gives daily totals, while the Toyama guide lists individual fares and fees and says accommodation and meals vary by date, so check booking sites. That's why we don't say which is cheaper and simply copy each guide's figures.
- Toyama basics: tram JPY 240 per ride, Glass Art Museum permanent exhibition JPY 200, Folk Museum JPY 210, Museum of Art and Design collection JPY 350, City Hall observation tower free
- Toyama extras: airport bus JPY 470, one-way Fugan Suijo Line cruise JPY 2,500 (including a one-way tram ticket), Former Baba Family Residence JPY 100
- Toyama Alpine Route: check fares on the official website (the guide notes fares posted as of 27 February 2026 and subject to change)
- Kanazawa budget: about ¥9,000-13,000 per day (business hotel, market food, buses)
- Kanazawa mid-range: about ¥20,000-30,000 per day (nicer hotel, restaurants, admissions)
- Kanazawa high-end: about ¥55,000+ per day (ryokan, kaiseki dining)
Weather by month, side by side
The guides pick slightly different times. The Toyama guide names April and May as good for walking, and the Kanazawa guide calls April and October-November the most beautiful. So we compare April, May, October and November side by side.
The figures are 1991–2020 normals from the Japan Meteorological Agency: Toyama station for Toyama and Kanazawa station for Kanazawa. Each line shows average high / average low / monthly precipitation.
In all four months the two cities' temperatures are similar. In all four months Kanazawa gets a little more precipitation than Toyama, and in both cities November's precipitation is much higher than April's and May's.
The Toyama guide says July and August are hot, with average highs of about 30–31°C, and that December to February brings snow (average January snowfall 104 cm). In Kanazawa, winter brings frequent snow along with snowy scenery and winter seafood, and summers are hot and humid. Normals are long-term averages, not this year's weather, so check the forecast before you go.
The Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route is scheduled to operate from 15 April to 30 November in 2026. The Toyama guide notes that Murodo is much colder than the lowlands, so bring rain gear, warm clothes and non-slip shoes even on sunny days.
- April: Toyama 18°C / 7°C / 135mm, Kanazawa 17°C / 8°C / 144mm
- May: Toyama 23°C / 13°C / 123mm, Kanazawa 22°C / 14°C / 138mm
- October: Toyama 22°C / 13°C / 172mm, Kanazawa 22°C / 14°C / 177mm
- November: Toyama 16°C / 7°C / 225mm, Kanazawa 16°C / 8°C / 251mm
What you do there: sights, food and getting around
Downtown Toyama is easy by tram. Toyama Castle, first built in 1543, has a keep rebuilt in 1954 that houses the Folk Museum, and the Toyama Glass Art Museum, inside the TOYAMA Kirari complex designed by Kengo Kuma, symbolizes Toyama as a "city of glass", a tradition that grew from making medicine bottles. The City Hall observation tower, with a 360-degree view from 70 m up, is free. Fugan Canal Kansui Park, about a 9-min walk from Toyama Station, has the Tenmon Bridge observation deck looking out to the Tateyama range, with the Toyama Prefectural Museum of Art and Design beside it.
The Fugan Suijo Line is a cruise of about 60 min along the canal from Kansui Park to Iwase, passing the Nakajima Lock, known as a "water elevator". The 2026 season runs from 20 March to 23 November, and there are non-operating days for canal maintenance (in 2026: 6 October and 10 November), so check the official website. Yatsuo, with stone-paved streets and wooden machiya, is about 25 min by JR, and its Owara Kaze no Bon festival, with about 300 years of history, is held every year for three days from 1 September. The Alpine Route links Tateyama Station in Toyama with Ogizawa Station in Nagano by cable car, highland bus, ropeway and more; from Murodo Terminal (2,450 m) it is about a 10–15 min walk to the volcanic lake Mikurigaike.
Kanazawa centers on Kenrokuen, counted among Japan's three great gardens, and Kanazawa Castle Park right next to it. The Higashi Chaya District with its wooden-lattice teahouses, Omicho Market with over 300 years of history, the round glass 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art and the Nagamachi Samurai District with earthen walls and canals are the other classics. Myoryuji (Ninja Temple) can be visited only by guided tour with advance phone reservation, and most highway buses to the thatched-roof village of Shirakawa-go need booking.
For food, Toyama has sushi made with "kitokito" (Toyama dialect for freshly caught) fish from Toyama Bay (firefly squid in spring, white shrimp in summer, red snow crab in autumn and yellowtail in winter), masu-zushi, a local dish with more than 100 years of history, and Toyama Black ramen with its jet-black soy sauce-based soup. Kanazawa has seafood rice bowls at Omicho Market (about ¥2,000-4,000), nodoguro (blackthroat seaperch), Kanazawa curry (about ¥800-1,200), Kanazawa oden, especially popular in winter (about ¥150-600 per piece), and gold-leaf ice cream.

- Toyama transport: tram JPY 240 per ride for adults (same fare in cash or with a nationwide transit IC card). Route 3, the loop line, circles Toyama Station and the city center in about 28 min and runs every 15 min.
- Toyama to Iwase: about 23 min on the Toyama Port Line tram to Higashi-Iwase, then about 10 min on foot.
- Kanazawa transport: frequent city buses link the station and main sights, and every bike-share bike is electric-assisted, so slopes are easy.
- Rain and snow are frequent in Kanazawa. Carry an umbrella, and wear non-slip shoes in winter.
How to choose, or combine the two
If you want an easy city trip by tram, a canal cruise, Alpine Route mountain scenery and Toyama Bay sushi, Toyama fits well. If you want garden walks, old teahouse and samurai streets, market seafood and a day trip to a thatched-roof village, Kanazawa fits well.
You can also visit both. According to the Toyama guide, the Hokuriku Shinkansen reaches Kanazawa Station in about 20 min. Check times and fares on the JR websites.
Entry procedures and online registration can change, so check official Japanese government information before you travel.
- Toyama's airport bus doesn't take notes of JPY 2,000 or more: have JPY 1,000 notes and coins ready
- Check the Fugan Suijo Line schedule and Alpine Route fares on the official websites
- For the Alpine Route, bring rain gear, warm clothes and non-slip shoes even on sunny days
- Book Kanazawa's Myoryuji tour and Shirakawa-go highway buses ahead via official information
- In Kanazawa's old teahouse districts, respect notices about private property and photography
