Three World Heritage sites in one day: the big picture
Mukden Palace, the Fuling Tomb of Nurhaci, founder of the Qing, and the Zhaoling Tomb of Emperor Hong Taiji are all World Heritage sites, which is why Shenyang is called the 'birthplace of a dynasty, city of two generations of emperors'. This themed route puts just these three into one day: Mukden Palace in the morning, Beiling Park (Zhaoling Tomb) at midday and Dongling Park (Fuling Tomb) in the afternoon, linked by Metro Lines 1 and 2.
The standard plan, which spreads the three sites over three days and adds Zhang Xueliang's Former Residence, Laobeishi and a museum, is in our Shenyang 2-night, 3-day route. Seeing all three in one day leaves less time at each, so if you prefer a slower pace, use that plan instead.
Sort this first: palace booking and closing days
All visitors to Mukden Palace must book in advance under their real name. Foreign visitors book with their passport and must show the same original passport at entry. Use the palace's official booking channels, and check official information for ticket prices.
Opening hours change with the season: 8:30–17:00 (last entry 16:15) from 10 April to 10 October, and 9:00–16:30 (last entry 15:45) from 11 October to 9 April. From 11 October to 9 April the palace is closed on Mondays (except public holidays), so in that period plan your heritage day for any day but Monday.
For opening hours, fees and booking at Beiling Park (Zhaoling Tomb) and Dongling Park (Fuling Tomb), check the official information before you go.
- Book Mukden Palace under your real name with your passport, and bring the same original passport
- From 11 October to 9 April, avoid Mondays (except public holidays)
- Last metro trains: from 1 April to 31 October 2026, 23:00 in both directions on Lines 1, 2, 4, 9 and 10; check official information from November
- Metro tickets: since June 2024, staffed windows at 20 stations, including the airport and Zhongjie, accept overseas bank cards; carry some cash in case a payment fails
Morning: Mukden Palace, right at opening time
Mukden Palace is a 10-minute walk from Zhongjie or Huaiyuanmen stations on Metro Line 1. Buses including the Ring Line (Huanlu), 118 and 132 stop near the palace; get off at Shenyang Fangcheng · Palace West Huamen or East Huamen and walk 5 minutes. Fangcheng and Zhongjie (Shenhe District), centred on the palace, is the area suggested for a first visit.
First built in 1625, the palace covers about 60,000 m² with 114 Qing-era buildings (over 500 rooms). The east route has the octagonal Dazheng Hall and the Ten Kings Pavilions, the middle route Chongzheng Hall, Phoenix Tower and Qingning Palace, and the west route Wensu Pavilion, which held the Siku Quanshu. It was listed as World Heritage in 2004.
Going in at opening time (8:30 or 9:00) means you are not racing the last entry. Leaving the palace, walk north to Zhongjie: on North Zhongjie lies the Khan's Palace site, once Nurhaci's bedchamber. First built in 1625, it was found during redevelopment in 2012, and the restored bedchamber is open next to the site exhibition hall.

Midday: Beiling Park (Zhaoling Tomb), resting place of Hong Taiji
From Zhongjie, take Line 1, change to Line 2 at Qingniandajie and get off at Beilinggongyuan. Check the official information before you go for journey times and fares.
Beiling Park, a 3.3 km² park opened as a park in 1927, surrounds the Zhaoling Tomb of Emperor Hong Taiji and Empress Xiaoduanwen. The tomb keeps 38 historic buildings and groups and became World Heritage in 2004. The area around Beiling Park is known for imperial tomb walks, parkland and seasonal events.

Afternoon: Dongling Park (Fuling Tomb), resting place of Nurhaci
From Beilinggongyuan, take Line 2, change to Line 1 at Qingniandajie and get off at Donglinggongyuan, a station on the eastern extension of Line 1 opened in June 2025. Taxis are metered and handy for outlying sights such as Dongling Park; showing your destination in Chinese helps.
Dongling Park is made up of the Fuling Tomb of Nurhaci and Empress Xiaocigao and a forested country park behind it. The address is 210 Dongling Road, Hunnan District.
If your palace booking is for the afternoon, you can swap the order: see Dongling Park (Fuling Tomb) in the morning, then ride the same Line 1 to Zhongjie for the palace. In that case keep to the palace's last entry (16:15 from 10 April to 10 October, 15:45 from 11 October to 9 April), and if you want to add the Zhaoling Tomb afterwards, check its hours in the official information before you go.
More in the evening, and when to go
If you still have energy in the evening, continue Hong Taiji's story at Laobeishi, a district that grew around Shisheng Temple, the imperial temple Hong Taiji ordered built in 1636, with heritage sites such as the Xibe family temple and Taiping Temple. It is a national 4A tourist attraction and a national night-time culture and tourism cluster, listed among the sights along Metro Line 2. Check the official information before you go for the station and opening hours.
May and September are the best months for walking. According to the WMO World Weather Information Service (climatological normals from the China Meteorological Administration) for Shenyang, 1961–1990, May averages a high of 23°C and a low of 11°C, and September 24°C and 12°C. December to February averages lows of -13 to -17°C, so a heavy coat, gloves and a hat are essential; July and August are wet (167 mm and 157 mm), so carry an umbrella.
