The short answer
Yantai is a port city on the northern coast of the Shandong Peninsula, with 1,071 km of coastline. You walk Chaoyang Street, Yantai Hill and Suochengli in the Zhifu old town, and ride the 1 CNY coastal sightseeing bus along the sea. In Penglai you can visit the seaside Penglai Pavilion, or take a boat to Changdao, a chain of 151 islands. Yantai is also known for wine, apples and seafood.
Qingdao is a seaside city on the same peninsula, known for red-roofed European-style old streets, coastal promenades, beer and seafood, and it makes an easy weekend getaway. Its sights sit within walking distance in the old town, and to the east Laoshan is where the mountains meet the sea.
Best for: Yantai suits travelers who want to range widely along the sea and into the countryside, with islands, beaches, historic pavilions and wineries. Qingdao suits travelers who want to wander old streets and the seaside promenade, then end the day with draft beer and seafood.
Airports and getting around
Yantai Penglai International Airport (YNT) is in Penglai District. Airport bus tickets are sold at the counter by Gate 6 in the Terminal 2 (T2) arrivals hall, and lines are listed for Huangbohai New Area, Muping, Penglai, Longkou and Laiyang/Qixia, plus Yantai South Station and the Yantai bus terminal. Times and routes change often, so check the bus operator's official notice or call. Taxis wait opposite Gate 7 on the Terminal 2 arrivals level.
Qingdao Jiaodong International Airport (TAO) is a long way north of the city. Since Metro Line 8 fully opened in September 2026, it runs from the airport to May Fourth Square with no change. Limited-stop express trains run only at set times, so check official information.
Getting around feels different too. In Yantai, Route 17 and the Eight Immortals-themed coastal sightseeing line cost 1 CNY and follow the coastline, and the official city-walk route from Zhifu Bay Square to Suochengli (about 5.3 km) can be walked in full. Yantai has several high-speed rail stations, so pick the one closest to where you are going. In Qingdao, metro lines connect the old town, May Fourth Square and the coast, with bag checks at every station, so allow extra time. A seaside path runs from Zhanqiao Pier to Badaguan and May Fourth Square.
- Yantai airport bus: counter by Gate 6, Terminal 2 arrivals hall (check official information for times and fares)
- Yantai taxi: opposite Gate 7 on the Terminal 2 arrivals level; have your address in Chinese
- Yantai high-speed rail stations: Yantai, Zhifu, Yantai West, Muping and Penglai (check official railway information for times)
- Qingdao Metro Line 8: from about 40 min to May Fourth Square by express train (longer on regular trains)
- Qingdao airport bus: about 1 hour to 1 hour 30 min to the city, about 25-30 CNY
- Qingdao taxi: official taxi rank at the airport, about 50 min to 1 hour to the city, metered
How many days, and where the money goes
Both guides suggest 3 to 4 days, but the Yantai guide adds 2-3 days on the islands if you want to see Changdao fully. The Yantai guide's plan runs from an old-town walk to a Tashan hike and the coast (or Yangma Island), then Penglai, then Changdao. In Qingdao it runs from Zhanqiao Pier and the old town to Signal Hill Park, St. Michael's Cathedral, Badaguan and May Fourth Square at night, then the beer museum and a beach or Laoshan.
Costs are listed city by city here. The Qingdao guide gives daily budgets per person by tier, while the Yantai guide lists transport and entry costs item by item and says accommodation and food vary a lot by date, so check booking sites.
- Qingdao budget: about 300 CNY per person per day (guesthouse, local food, metro)
- Qingdao mid-range: about 600-900 CNY per person per day (city hotel, seafood restaurants, entry fees)
- Qingdao comfortable: about 1,500 CNY+ per person per day (sea-view upscale hotel, car with driver)
- Yantai: coastal sightseeing bus Route 17 is 1 CNY; seaside spots such as beaches and Yangma Island are free, and Yantai Hill was free as of October 2026
- Yantai: Changdao boat 45 CNY each way (regular boat), Changdao all-area ticket 129 CNY, seal feeding at Moon Bay 30 CNY
- Yantai: check official information for Penglai Pavilion admission, airport bus fares and winery visits
- In Qingdao, seafood is often priced by weight. Confirm the price per jin (500 g) and cooking fees before ordering
When to go: seasons and weather
The two guides recommend the same months. The Yantai guide says May-June and September-October are good for coastal walks, and the Qingdao guide calls May-June and September-October mild and clear, the best time.
The Qingdao figures below are 1991–2020 normals from the China Meteorological Administration submission · WMO normals collection (NOAA NCEI), Qingdao station (high/low temperature and monthly rainfall). For Yantai, this section follows the Yantai guide's season notes instead of figures; check official weather information for monthly temperatures and rainfall before you go.
In summer, the Yantai guide calls July and August beach season, and the Qingdao guide says July and August are crowded with beachgoers and hotels fill fast during the summer beer festival. The Yantai guide notes that autumn mornings and evenings are cool with large day-night temperature swings, and suggests a windproof jacket for the seafront. In winter, Yantai is cold, so pack warm clothes, and Qingdao's sea winds are cold. Qingdao can get sea fog or dust in spring.
Both cities' sights are crowded around National Day (October 1), and Yangma Island in Yantai may have traffic controls during holidays. Boats from Yantai to the islands can be suspended in strong wind or thick fog, so check the forecast on your Changdao day.
- Qingdao January: 3°C/-2°C, 10 mm
- Qingdao May: 21°C/14°C, 64 mm
- Qingdao June: 24°C/19°C, 71 mm
- Qingdao August: 29°C/23°C, 160 mm

What you'll see and eat
Yantai's city side is the Zhifu old town and the coast. Chaoyang Street's old buildings are filled with shops and cafés; Yantai Hill is described as having Asia's most complete surviving group of early-modern consulate buildings, plus a lighthouse and the seaside Relang Pavilion; and Suochengli's grey-brick lanes are more than 600 years old. All are linked on foot. The east coast runs from sunrise at No. 1 Bathing Beach to Moon Bay and the seal park, and on Tashan, south of Zhifu, the route to the Sanhe Pagoda is about 3.5 km and about an hour up, with a cable car down in about 10 minutes.
Yantai's countryside is a big draw too. In Penglai, Penglai Pavilion, linked to the legend of the Eight Immortals Crossing the Sea, has an old wall above the sea, a cross-sea cable car and a boardwalk. About 45 minutes by boat from Pengchang Passenger Port, Changdao's 151 islands line the strait where the Yellow Sea meets the Bohai Sea. Highlights are Yueya Bay's colourful pebbles (taking them is not allowed), the sea cliffs and lighthouse sunsets of Jiuzhangya, and Fengshan Linhai, where you can see the Yellow Sea-Bohai boundary. There is also Yangma Island's 'jelly sea', called the 'Hawaii of the East', Zhifu's wine culture, which began when a wine company opened there in 1892, and the wineries of Penglai's Qiushan valley.
Qingdao is old streets and seaside walks. The classics are Zhanqiao Pier stretching out over the sea, Signal Hill Park looking over the red roofs of the old town and the sea, the twin-spired St. Michael's Cathedral, the old villas of the Badaguan scenic area, the beer museum with beer history and tastings, and May Fourth Square at night. Laoshan, a mountain by the sea with old Taoist temples, is far from the city, so allow a day.
Seafood leads in both. Yantai's signatures are spoon worm rice, Spanish mackerel dumplings, pan-fried starch jelly (Yantai menzi), seafood dough-drop soup (geda tang), Muping barbecue skewers and, in autumn, Yantai apples and Laiyang pears; Qingdao's are spicy stir-fried clams, draft beer, fish dumplings and lamb skewers.

How to choose — or do both
If you want to range widely along the sea and into the countryside, with islands, beaches, historic pavilions and wineries, choose Yantai; for red-roofed old streets, seaside promenades and evenings of draft beer and seafood, Qingdao fits well. To visit both, add up the guides' trip lengths (3 to 4 days each), and set aside extra island days if you want Changdao too. Check the official information before you go for how to travel between the two cities and how long it takes.
If you are weighing Dalian against Qingdao, see the comparison below as well. Before you go, check these points too.
- Entry requirements, including visa-free entry, change often: check the Chinese embassy's official information
- IDs are checked when boarding boats to Changdao, so bring your passport (non-local vehicles cannot go onto the islands)
- The Qingdao guide says some foreign apps and services may be restricted in China: sort out your connection (roaming, eSIM, etc.) and a Chinese map app in advance
- Qingdao's airport is far from the city, so allow plenty of time on departure day
- Admission fees, opening hours and boat times can change, so check official information
