Shizuoka is the capital of Shizuoka Prefecture, on Suruga Bay between Tokyo and Nagoya along the old Tokaido route. Tokugawa Ieyasu grew up here and spent his final years at Sunpu Castle, and he was first laid to rest at Kunozan Toshogu Shrine. Miho no Matsubara and Nihondaira offer views of Mt Fuji over the sea, and the city is known for green tea and Suruga Bay seafood such as sakura shrimp.

What to eat

Shizuoka oden

Shizuoka's soul food: ingredients simmered in a dark broth of beef tendon and rich soy sauce, sprinkled with green laver and dashi powder. Oden eateries line Aoba Oden-gai and Aoba Yokocho in the city center.

Sakura shrimp & shirasu

Sakura shrimp are landed only in Suruga Bay and called the jewels of Suruga Bay. Eat them raw, boiled or as kakiage fritters. Shirasu (whitebait) from Suruga Bay can be tried fresh and raw here at the source.

Tororo-jiru

The specialty of the old Mariko post station: grated wild yam thinned with dashi and miso, poured over barley rice. Travelers have eaten it since the Edo period, and Hiroshige pictured it in a print.

Shizuoka tea

Tea has been grown here since the mid-12th century, and the area produces more green tea than anywhere else in Japan. Tea also goes into dishes such as soba and gelato. If you want to pick tea yourself, May is the best time.

Abekawa mochi

Shizuoka's local sweet of soft, freshly pounded mochi coated in sweetened soybean flour. Many places now serve it in two kinds, with soybean flour and with smooth red bean paste. Legend says Ieyasu gave it its name.
